The effect of the Kincade Fire and the winds that have propelled its size and threat magnitude has been alarming. Though not as devastating (thus far) as the 2017 North Bay fires, the Kincade Fire is no less frightening and disruptive. With massive power outages, over 180,000 evacuations and the encroachment of the fire toward Healdsburg, Windsor, and Wikkiup, we have all been on edge and trying to cope.

Our Church is Serving as a Shelter

As of 8:00 p.m. Saturday (10/26), we opened the church doors for members, friends, and neighbors to serve as a shelter. Saturday, 15 people stayed overnight, many with pets.  By Sunday at 4:00 a.m., our numbers grew to 53.  On Sunday evening 24 people stayed overnight and on Monday evening we counted 19.  Early Sunday morning the Sonoma County Sheriff’s office announced a mandatory evacuation of the church location south to College Street, but within 15 minutes the Santa Rosa Police Department reversed that order and drew the line at Lewis/Steele Lane.  In addition to people, we have housed 10 cats, 8 dogs, 1 snake, and 1 turtle.

This Week’s Schedule

Since early Sunday morning, we realized we have had to cancel all scheduled events at the church not knowing the effect of the current “wind event” projected to last through 5:00 p.m. Wednesday (10/30).

Thus, all activities of the church this week have been cancelled (the only exception is tonight’s choir rehearsal - 10/29).

Meanwhile, the church is open as a gathering place to share food, fellowship, and charge electronic devices. If you want to join us for dinner, please contact us in advance so we can plan adequate food servings.  As a reminder, the church has the recommended N-95 masks available to protect against smoke inhalation.  After Wednesday we will re-evaluate the need for continuing to serve as a shelter one day at a time.

Sunday Worship, November 3

Barring unforeseen circumstances, we plan to resume our regular schedule of worship and weekly activities this Sunday, November 3.
