Neighbour Profile:
Wind in their Hair - Jennifer Reid

Jennifer Reid became deeply aware of the trials of living with Alzheimer’s as she offered care during her mother’s later years. A longtime resident in False Creek South, Jen imagined how much her Mom and other seniors living in isolation might benefit from recreational access to the outdoors. She connected with a burgeoning international organization, Cycling Without Age, to offer free bike rides to seniors in specially designed “trishaws." Read more here.

Hallowe'en in the Creek

What's happening in the Creek this Hallowe'en?

Almost all kids will have the False Creek Housing Co-op at the top of their go-to list. All those doors and so little time!

The highlight for everyone in the know will be the Spruce Village courtyard’s annual “set up”, voted by neighbourhood kids as THE place in the Creek on Hallowe’en. Read more here.

False Creek Elementary Turns It Up On Climate Action

A new student-led Climate Club is underway at the school for kids wanting to work on initiatives toward climate action. Meeting weekly at lunchtime, the Club’s current focus is on a grant application for their first project.

Not surprisingly, many False Creek students joined the huge Climate Strike on September 27. Grade 6 and 7 students walked with their teachers, joining the event though a field trip while younger students joined in when their parents picked them up after lunch.

Watch Out for Raccoons!

How worried should we be about raccoons in our neighbourhood? “Very!” according to resident Louise Kligman.

Last month she and her husband, Evan, were taking the short walk home from the Marine Mews parking garage with their small 10 year old dog, Brie, on leash. It was dark and the area poorly lit.

Suddenly, three raccoons appeared and frightened the dog who raced for the cover of nearby bushes, shedding her halter as she went. Then the attack began. Read more here.

David Hulchanski, distinguished professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto and keen observer of federal, provincial and local housing policy, spoke to a standing room only crowd Oct 3 on the topic of False Creek South’s legacy as a model community. Read more here.
