Sitting down to write the last newsletter of the open season is a daunting task; what can I say to sum up the last six months? So many things have happened, people like you have visited us from all over the world, and the planting, growing and harvesting seasons have come to an end. Time for a winter rest. So, what I will do is share a few of my personal highlights with you all.
My main task on the farm, in these busy days of parenting small children, is taking care of the animals and the barn with my girls. My biggest highlight from this season has been getting to know those of you who come up to visit the animals on a regular basis in the early mornings. It makes my day when I suddenly have a couple of extra kids in tow, shovelling beside me in the animal pens (sorry to you parents who have had to wash barn smells and manure off your child’s pants!). The look of wonder on kids faces when they see a chicken lay an egg, pet a kitten for the first time, or have a goat tickle the palm of their hand with their tongue is irreplaceable. Moreover, visiting with you, parents and grandparents, has been refreshing and encouraging for me.
Another highlight was the rollkuchen and watermelon festival that we had in August. I had the privilege of working in the Cannery rolling out and cutting the dough for the event. It was great fun to work alongside friends, producing a meal that was a big part of my childhood, for you to enjoy. But even more fun was hearing the response from you. There were so many stories shared that evening of family memories, of time spent in grandma’s kitchen, and of lazy summer days. I love that food can generate such nostalgia.
My children have highlights to share as well: Heidi’s (age 5) favourite part of the year was the giant pumpkin contest that she entered last weekend. Her pumpkin weighed 116 lbs! Anna (age 4) loved strawberry season, picking and eating the juicy berries. Emily (age 2) says she enjoyed opening and shutting the Cafe door (It’s the little things in life, right?!).
There are seven more days with one more weekend to come to up to the farm to stock up and make some of your own family memories and highlights. All apple varieties except Honeycrisp are on sale at two 25lb boxes for $40! The pumpkin tours will be running Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-4 and Tuesday at 10 and 11. We close for the season at 5:00pm on October 31st.
