Congratulations to doctoral candidate Amy Bowman-McElhone, who joins the faculty this fall at Carlow University in Pittsburgh as assistant professor in Art History, tenure-track, and director of the University Art Gallery.

The exhibition Identity in the Ottoman Empire at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts will reopen on Thursday, October 24 at 6 pm with new contributions by student curators working with Professor Lynn Jones. Ten student groups developed virtual and physical exhibits centered on structures designed by Mimar Sinan, with an added focus on the role women played in shaping the visual expression of power in the Ottoman capitals of Constantinople and Edirne.

Art History at Florida State University was impressively represented by faculty, students, and alumni at conferences this fall, including the 2019 Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC), which was held in Chattanooga, TN, and the Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present Annual Conference (ASAP), held at the University of Maryland.

Kelly Scandone (BA '17) shares her journey from an undergraduate at FSU to her new career as the programs and communications coordinator for the Diplomacy Center Foundation.

Under the direction of Professors Paul Niell and Kyle Killian, a team of graduate students in the Department of Art History’s Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies (MCHS) program spent six weeks in Puerto Rico recording historical properties and townscapes. Their summer was dedicated to documenting historic architecture and landscapes on the south side of the island endangered by the September 2017 impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria and their aftermath.

Students on FSU's International Program in Florence this year are continuing a tradition of art conservation partnership that dates back to the beginning of the Florence program in 1966. Through a partnership with Advancing Women Artists, students are assisting in a program focussed on identifying, restoring, researching, and exhibiting works of art by women artists in the museum collections of Florence.

The Department of Art History invites students currently working toward an MA or a PhD to submit abstracts of papers for presentation at our 37th Annual Art History Graduate Student Symposium, which will be held on Friday afternoon, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, 2020.

In celebration of the centennial of the Bauahaus, Interior Architecture & Design students in Professor Marlo Ransdell's furniture design class applied Bauhaus-inspired practical learning techniques to design functional objects for everyday use. Their work is on display through Friday, October 25, in the WJB Gallery in an exhibition curated and designed by IA&D Professor Yelena McLane.
