Emma Nelson’s summer was spent outside, hanging out on trails, and talking to people about waste.

Nelson, a University of Iowa senior, worked at Mount Trashmore in Cedar Rapids as an intern with the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency.

The University of Iowa’s Graduate and Professional Student Government seeks to showcase local restaurants through climate-conscious menu items within the Iowa City community — specifically its food scene.

GPSG Sustainability Committee Co-Chairs Christian Bako and Amina Grant proposed the passport. The pair began working on the project last academic year, Bako said.

“This idea was inspired by something called the ‘Pub Pass’ up in the Twin Cities,” Bako said. “You can grab a pass and go to multiple breweries up there. I thought it was a pretty cool idea and knew we could take it back to Iowa City and take it from the sustainability angle to integrate it into GPSG’s work.”

GPSG President Dexter Golinghorst said the co-chairs applied for the Iowa City Community Climate Action Grant, which allows for the project to be funded in the short term.

University of Iowa Parking and Transportation has partnered with the Eastern Central Iowa Council of Governments (ECICOG) to offer discounted bus passes for university students, faculty, and staff to ride 380 Express. The discounted bus passes will be available to university faculty and staff employed 50% or greater and all students. University riders can begin purchasing the discounted bus passes on October 11, 2019.

Nearly half of the University of Iowa’s waste comes from UI Hospitals and Clinics.
 
Providing over 1 million patients each year with medical care and serving 9,000 meals a day, the hospital sends a significant amount of waste to the landfill — 34 percent of which has the potential to be reduced. These include things like drinks in styrofoam cups for patients, or plastic bags provided at convenience stores.
 
UI senior Claire Jacobmeyer has spent the last year working as the UI Office of Sustainability and the Environment project intern for waste reduction at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Her challenge has been to find ways to reduce waste at an institution that relies on single-use products to remain sanitary for patient safety and health.
