Tuesday 29th October, 2019

Kia Ora Koutou,
Only 5 more sleeps until our Bradford Community Market Day on Sunday November 3rd from 11am - 1pm.  It is going to be a fabulous family day for everyone to enjoy!  A big THANK YOU to Karen, Lucas' mum, who created our very eye catching Market Day Flyer!  The PTA also wish to thank all those whānau who have already got in behind this community event by bringing in donations for the grocery hamper, offering to help on the day by bringing in baking, donating ingredients, delivering or sharing our Market Day Flyer, or helping on stalls or booking a car boot space or desk space to sell your wares.   A Mystery Jar was sent home on Friday with each child to 'fill' and bring back by Thursday please.  We are desperately seeking more help for 'manning' stalls such as baking/plants/BBQ and Sponge the Teacher, please let us know if you are available as soon as possible.
All those who have offered to bring baking need to bring this along to school on the morning of the Market Day to Room 6 between 9:30-10am please so we can price and display.  This is a super popular stall and we would love as much baking as possible ... if you haven't put your name down to bake but have some time we would welcome your baking donation!  All those helping with stalls, please arrive at 10:40am.

Car Boot spaces are still available for $10 a space, children can also book a 'desk space' for $2 to sell their wares.  Please email pta@bradford.school.nz to secure your space.   A Children's Talent Fest will be held at the Market Day for the many creative and talented children we have at Bradford who love to perform; entries forms are available in the foyer and need to be in by the end of the week.   We are still collecting donations of food items for a grocery hamper, which can be dropped off in the foyer. Our small, but mighty PTA team are organising a fabulous family day to enjoy and really need everyone to rally around and support this.   Thank you!

Navigating the Journey Year 5 and 6 will join together this week to learn about pubertal change, which is part of the Health Curriculum.  Research shows that children are reaching puberty at earlier ages. It is important that children know that this is a natural and normal change that all our bodies go through in preparation for adulthood, and what to expect.  As part of the learning the children will learn correct anatomical names of the reproductive areas of the body and processes that we go through physically and emotionally and why this occurs.  Children will be encouraged to ask questions they have, and also talk about pubertal change with caregivers at home.  Thank you to those Year 5 and 6 caregivers who attended our Information evening last week which outlined the areas taught in this learning.  Sessions will take place over Tuesday and Thursday of this week.  Whānau are encouraged to get in touch if you have any queries.

Mrs Knopp will be away from November 4th through until the end of the year for an operation she has been awaiting through the public health system. We will miss her (and she will miss us too I think!) but know it is important for her to have the full 6 weeks recovery time needed.
We are very fortunate to have the wonderful Mrs Trish Kay in Room 5 for the full 6 weeks Mrs Knopp is away.  Mrs Knopp has liaised with Mrs Kay to share the term’s plans, children’s plans and any specific learning needs, interests and strengths.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
Ngā mihi,
Melissa and the Bradford Team

Let's support our wonderful Support Staff!

Our amazing teacher assistants, librarian and office manager are some of the special staff at our school that are part of a very caring and dedicated team.  They go above and beyond in their day to day work; with the children at the forefront of all that they do.  Support Staff make a difference for our children.  Now it's time to make difference for Support Staff.
Bradford School teachers and student community stands with our Support Staff in NZEI’s negotiations for  significant pay increase that recognises their skill and expertise, improvements to allowances, and lobby the government for better funding for schools to fund our important support staff roles.

Currently 90% of teacher assistants nationwide earn between $17-70 - $20-69; under the living wage rate of $21.15.  They often face insecurity of hours from one term to the next depending on renewal of funding sources that provide for the students they support.

Our Support Staff deserve to have at least the base start rate of a living wage; students deserve to be funded at the level of hours they actually need, and schools deserve to be funded at a rate to pay a living wage.

Schools put many hours into applying for 'funds' above the operation grant (from which Support Staff wages are funded) for the increasing number of children with needs to have the learning assistant support they deserve and need - if these applications are successful the hourly rate that these are paid, is not the living wage and generally do not give the required and needed hours, therefore schools put money beyond what they are funded for towards wages for support staff.  This creates 'competing' areas in the school budget which is allocated for costs to run the school, including wages, power, phone, heating, learning resources and programmes, Chatbus, administration and stationery costs, art supplies, repairs and maintenance to buildings, ground maintenance, painting, vandalism costs, IT equipment, kapahaka, bathroom supplies, leases for photocopiers, insurances, electronic data management systems, professional learning ... and many, many more - all out of an operation grant that simply isn't enough to cover ... a bit like when you have $350 coming into your household each week, but your bills actually total $600.

We ask our community to get in behind our wonderful support staff and show our support by wearing black and white on Friday November 15th.

2020 Enrolments and Class Placements

2020 Class Placements
Over the next few weeks we will begin putting the draft classes together for 2020.

When placing children in classes, we approach this as a team and consider the following aspects:
numbers and gender balance of children we have in each level, age, individual and social needs of children and their relationships and friendships with others. We need to carefully consider all of these areas, and use our professional knowledge, expertise and understanding of the students, to make the best decision for each child.

If there is anything you would like us to consider regarding your child/ren when the classes are being drafted, please contact Melissa to make a time to chat. principal@bradford.school.nz  453 6254

2020 Enrolments
If you know of anyone who is planning to attend Bradford in 2020 but have yet to put  their enrolment in, please remind them we would appreciate this as soon as possible.  Receiving enrolments as early as possible helps us to manage our resources and enrolment zone.  We are likely to  have some places for out of zone students; depending on the number of in zone enrolments that are received.  Information regarding our enrolment zone is available on the school website.  We request that all enrolments are received by November 15th, if the number of out of zone enrolments exceeds spaces a ballot will be held on November 22nd.
