WCC SPOOKTACULAR EVENT

The Writing and Communications Corner (the WCC) is holding a Fan Fiction Halloween Contest, open immediately to all CBU students. To participate, write your best and scariest Halloween fiction, and submit it to wcc@cbu.edu by noon on MONDAY, October 28. (Please, only one entry per individual.) After removing names, lead WCC consultants will judge the entries anonymously and choose the three scariest stories, whose authors will get a very cool prize! The finale of the WCC Spooktacular Event will be celebrated with a party in the WCC (Rosa Deal 102) on Thursday — Halloween Day — from 4:00 tp 6:00 p.m. with food and readings from the top three entries. Get ready to get spooky at the WCC! 
DELTA SIGMA PI HALLOWEEN BASKET SALE

MARTIAL ARTS MONDAY
Free martial arts classes with instructor Dr. John Malmo (Management, Marketing & Economics) continue on Monday in Sabbatini Lounge, 7:30-9:00 p.m. The martial art style we will focus on this semester is Kombatan Arnis, a Filipino martial art of stick fighting. CBU GSA is hosting a Halloween- and Meme-themed event on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Rosa Deal 303. Bring your friends for a night filled with food, games, music, and memes! Don’t miss out on our Balloon Popping competition, Mummy Game, and a Costume Contest (it’s a must!)!! Join the CBU Bookstore for Star Wars Reads Day on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Special activities will take place throughout the day, including crafts, a Star Wars costume contest, trivia, and more! 
STARS PLANT SALE

STARS (Students Tackling Autism-Related Syndromes) will be selling plants on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. outside of Alfonso Dining Hall. The beautiful plants make a great gift or can brighten any office, dorm room, or apartment. Instructions on how to care for your hardy plant will be provided. Many of the plants absorb moisture from the air around them so little care is required and no soil is needed. All proceeds from our fundraiser are used to provide activities and events for students on the autism spectrum or those who experience social anxiety/social difficulties.
FALL FESTIVAL

The Student Activities Council will host a Fall Festival on Thursday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Buckman Quad. There will be pumpkin painting, face painting, games, coffee and hot chocolate, CANDY, SAC racing, and a photo booth! There will also be opportunities to win gift cards, candy jars, and a giant pumpkin! Come out and celebrate the fall season with us! Let's get spooky! 
GSA CULTURAL FOOD FUNDRAISER 

CBU GSA is holding a fundraiser on Friday in Alfonso Dining Hall, 12:00-2:00 p.m., selling churros, spring rolls, and other cultural foods. @CBUGSA 
BOWLING FOR UGANDA 
Beta Beta Beta, the national Biological Honor Society, is hosting Bowling for Uganda to raise money for Mother Health International on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Billy Hardwick’s Bowling Alley (1576 S White Station Rd). This is a great opportunity for you to have fun with your friends and raise money for a great cause. Mother Health International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to responding and providing relief to pregnant women and children in areas of disaster, war and extreme economic poverty. They are committed to reducing maternal, infant and child mortality rates by creating culturally competent and sustainable birth centers using the midwifery model of care. One of their programs includes a Ugandan Birth House, Ot Nywal Me Kuc (House of Birth and Peace), a sustainable, solar-powered birth house located in Atiak, Northern Uganda. Raffle prizes will be awarded during the event, and Tri-Beta also be having a bake sale throughout the week. Raffle tickets may be purchased for $1. Sign-ups for bowling teams are due by November 1 to Bawan Qaladize at bqaladiz@cbu.edu. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS 
Hola CBU, SAC, and Voices United will be co-sponsoring Día de Los Muertos on Friday in the Wilson Family Commons in the LLC from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.  Come dressed up for either Halloween or for the Day of the Dead. There will be a costume contest, face painting, traditional Day of the Dead food (including Abuelita's and tamales/tacos), and a DJ to dance the night away to. This event is opened to everyone! Come for the dance, the culture, the food, or just fun! Tickets will be $5.00 and will be sold in Alfonso Dining Hall during lunch this week. If you need inspiration for costumes, check out the SAC, HOLA CBU, or Voices United Instagram pages. 
I’LL BE BACK… TO THE MOVIES

The Office of Recreation will host a raffle contest for 65 lucky winners to attend a private screening of the upcoming film, Terminator: Dark Fate on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Studio on the Square. The raffle will begin during lunch in Alfonso Dining Hall on Monday and continue until Thursday. Winners will be contacted via text message on October 31 starting at 1:00 p.m. All entries will only be accepted in person. Transportation will not be provided. Any questions, please contact Ian A. Chris Fagin (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics '20) represented CBU as a voting delegate at the national Tau Beta Pi Convention in Columbus, OH on October 10-12. Tau Beta Pi is the oldest engineering honors society in the U.S., and CBU's chapter (Tennessee Delta) is one of 248 active collegiate chapters.

Bob Dorsey (BSBA-Accounting '79) has been elected to serve on the Board of Governors of the Investment Company Institute (ICI). The ICI is the leading association representing regulated funds globally that include mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts (UITs) in the U.S., as well as similar funds offered to investors in jurisdictions worldwide. Bob is the vice chairman and co-founder of Ultimus Fund Solutions, a leading provider of full-service fund administration, accounting, and investor solutions to support the launching and servicing of registered funds, private funds, and public plans. 
Brittany Sanning Hartnett (Economics/Finance ’08) has been named by Working Mother as a "Top Wealth Advisor Mom" for the second year in a row. Brittany is a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Atlanta and is a Certified Financial Planner™ and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor. She was also named by Forbes to its list of "America's Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors" in 2018. She currently resides in Morningside, a neighborhood in Midtown Atlanta, with her husband Matthew and their two children, Kennedy and James. Brittany is actively involved in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Bright Futures Atlanta.
Ray Karasek (BSBA-Accounting '03) and Laura Veras were married on October 26 at  Friends of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish in Agawam, MA. Ray is the auxiliary services business director at Community College of Rhode Island, the largest community college in New England, and the former director of business services and budget manager at CBU.

Gabby Salinas (Biochemistry '11) was named to the 2019 Class of Women of Achievement in the category of "Heroism" and is featured among them in the October edition of Memphis magazine. Gabby is cited for her courage as a child coming to the U.S. for cancer treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, her co-founding of “Danny’s Dream Team” (former patients who run races to raise funds for St. Jude in honor of founder Danny Thomas), her political efforts for the expansion of Medicaid, and her campaign for election to the Tennessee State Senate.

Dr. Malinda Fitzgerald (Biology, Retired) and her husband recently purchased a "conquer your fears" package at an auction benefitting Forever Young, a support organization for WW2 veterans. Included in the package were three events for four people each: NASCAR driving, the Go Ape Zip Line at Shelby Farms, and tandem skydiving at West Tennessee Skydiving. On October 20, Dr. Fitzgerald (second from left above) was joined by Keane Reneé Prosser (Biology '18), Dr. Lyndsey Pierson (Biology), and Elizabeth Hayes (Electrical Engineering '18). The team — calling itself "The Fitz Flyers" — is now hooked and has purchased another skydiving jump.

CBU Rankings

Zippia, a national career services and career studies firm geared to college students and recent graduates, has included CBU in its "10 Best Colleges For Biology Majors In Tennessee for 2019." To determine its rankings, Zippia studies data on the quality of the Biology Program and how students perform after college, among other criteria.
EDsmart.org, a nationally recognized publisher of college resources and independent rankings, has ranked CBU No. 1 in its 2020 edition of the Best Online Colleges in Tennessee. Its rankings are based on Cost (average net price), academic quality (graduation rate), student satisfaction (retention rate), and salary after graduation (the median earnings of former students who received federal financial aid, at 10 years after entering the school).

This weeks Lasallian Student Leader of the Week is Krishna Patel! This kind, independent, organized, and hard-working student has always been eager to help others around her. While juggling her academics, Krishna remains faithful to her commitments and has been experienced by her peers to be a good communicator, honest, and respectful to all. A huge thank you to Krishna for her investment into CBU and for her commitment to living out "Respect for all persons" one of our Lasallian core values! We see and appreciate you!

What does being a Lasallian Student mean to you? Being a Lasallian Student to me means not only holding strong moral and ethical values, but having the ability to be a kind-hearted and approachable person who is always willing to lend a helping hand or give advice to people in tough times. Whether it be on campus or off campus, a Lasallian Student should always be asking what they can do more to help.
What advice do you have for other students when it comes to leading? I feel like, as a leader, you should genuinely care about and enjoy what you are doing to give back to CBU and even to the community. Following this, I would say leading with passion is a great trait every leader has that keeps them going through the toughest situations. Being a leader you should be an example of what you want your organization to be reflected as, and to do so a leader should not just say what needs to be done, but take action when things need to get done. Also, the best thing you can ever do whether you are in a leadership position or not is to simply be nice to people and to make friends. It is important to not see leadership as power, but as an opportunity to be of greater service and to get others involved as well. 
What is your favorite thing about CBU? My favorite thing about CBU is definitely the small size of our campus. I actually come from a fairly small town, so moving to Memphis was a major shock. CBU’s small campus made it much easier for me to adjust into a big city over the last few years. I also love that many of the professors get to personally know their students and really try help if you happen to be struggling or just need to chat.

Castings, CBU's Journal of Literature & Fine Arts, is seeking submissions in the following genres: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction/essay, fine art, and photography. Each submission will be considered for the 2019-2020 Castings Awards. The top three entries in each genre will win a showcase at the Vincent O'Neill Reading Series/CastingsRelease Party and a CASH PRIZE! 1st Place: $100, 2nd Place: $50, 3rd Place: $25. ALL SAINT'S DAY & ALL SOUL'S DAY: The beginning of November offers us the opportunity to slow down and reflect. With the Feast of All Saints' Day and All Souls’ Day on November 1 and 2, we pause as a faith community to remember our deceased loved ones and community members. It is out of this spirit of remembrance, that we invite you to submit names of deceased family and friends to be entered into our book of prayers. As we lift up these prayers as a CBU Community, we invite all to celebrate the University’s All Saint's Day liturgy on Friday, November 1, at 5:00 p.m. in Stritch Chapel. KOINONIA STUDENT-LED RETREAT

Koinonia, a  Greek word meaning "Community," is a peer-led, peer-planned, and peer-directed retreat that will be a wonderful experience open to all of our students. Join us for a stress free weekend as we discover ourselves, God, and others. Christian Brothers University Koinonia IV — or CBUK for short — will take place at St. Columba Retreat Center on November 1-3. ADORATION AND RECONCILIATION: Eucharistic Adoration will be held every Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel located in Barry Hall. Fr. GALLERY OPENING: small_bars AND #millennialproblems

The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery opens two new exhibitions on Friday, November 8 with a public reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ry McCullough and Nick Satinover collaboratively present "small_bars" in the main gallery, a collection of collateral materials such as audio recordings, videos, printed ephemera, performative events, and structural arrangements. In the gallery foyer, Natalie Tyree confronts "#millennialproblems" by combining digital imagery with watercolors, doodles, letterpress, and collage-based media. FREE REFRESHMENTS! The exhibitions will be on display through December 16.
MEMPHIS IN MAIZE 

Theta Tau Engineering Fraternity will host a corn-related theme event called "Memphis in Maize" on Saturday, November 9 at the Nolan Field from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be games, food, and test your throwing skills at the cornhole competition plus other fun competitions!. Winner will receive a special prize! The entry fee will only be $5.00! MISTLETOE VARIETY SHOW
STARS is excited to announce the second annual "Mistletoe Variety Show" that will be held in the University Theater on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. This is a campus-wide event in which STARS invites students, faculty, and staff to not only be members of the audience but also to participate in the show! We encourage you to come show off your talent, skill, and creativity!

Buc Bulletin

MEN'S SOCCER (7-7-1, 5-4-1 GSC): The Bucs traveled to West Alabama on Friday for a 1-0 victory in double overtime. The double overtime was repeated on Sunday in the match against the University of Alabama in Huntsville, which finally ended with a 2-2 tie. The Bucs continue their road play on Wednesday as they take on Harding University at 4:00 p.m. Full schedule…
WOMEN'S SOCCER (8-3-1, 4-2-1 GSC): The LadyBucs faced West Alabama on Friday and were outshot 18-3 for a 0-1 loss. They fell again against Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday, 1-3. The Lady Bucs return to Signaigo Field on Friday as they take on Valdosta State at 5:00 p.m. Full schedule…
VOLLEYBALL (6-19, 3-6 GSC):The Lady Bucs returned to Canale Arena for a match against Henderson State last Tuesday and jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Reddies rallied back to claim a 3-2 victory. On Friday, the team took its first three-set GSC sweep of the season in a victory over Valdosta State at Canale Arena. West Georgia won the Saturday match at Canale, 3-0. The Lady Bucs hit the road to take on conference foe Auburn Montgomery on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Full schedule…
CROSS COUNTRY: The CBU cross country teams participated in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Cross Country Championship at the University of Montevallo Cross Country Course Saturday morning. Two CBU runners earned All-GSC honors as they led the Lady Bucs to a sixth-place finish and the Bucs to a fifth-place team result. Johanna Wistokat finished 13th of 91 runners in the women's 5k race, earning second-team All-GSC honors. Peter Torres led the Bucs to their highest finish since 2012 (5th) as he crossed the finish line with a time of 25:55.28. His finish helped him land in 11th of 105 runners in the men's 8k race, which also placed him on the All-GSC second-team. CBU's next meet will be the NCAA Div. II South Regional Championship on November 9 in Lakeland, FL. Full schedule…
GOLF: The Bucs wrapped up play at the Matt Dyas Invitational last Wednesday with a ninth place finish. CBU faced off against a pair of teams currently ranked in the top 10. TENNIS: The Lady Bucs finished a three-match weekend slate October 18-20 with a 2-1 record, dropping their first contest at Henderson State 1-6, and bounced back to knock off Ouachita Baptist (6-1) and Freed-Hardeman (6-0). The Bucs earned a 7-0 victory over visiting Freed-Hardeman at Windyke Country Club.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (0-0): The Memphis Tigers used a 20-3 run over an eight-minute span in the second half to pull way for an 86-53 exhibition win over the Bucs on Thursday night at Fed Ex Forum. The Bucs begin the regular season on Friday, November 8 when they travel to Central State (Ohio) for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff. Full schedule…
