RURAL FIRST RESPONDER ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE: A NATIONAL CRISIS
In 2017, approximately 115 emergency first responders died by suicide. Experts contend that this epidemic is associated with a variety of factors, one of which is access to mental health care. Rates of suicide have continued to grow since 2005, and rates of mental health challenges continue to rise as well. Read more here.
 
A YEAR AFTER SUICIDE, AVICII'S FATHER OPENS UP ABOUT HIS SON
With his mega-hit "Wake Me Up," released in 2013, Avicii became a global superstar. But Avicii was ambivalent about his success. In a documentary filmed before his death, he talked openly about his anxiety, depression, and addiction. Watch it here.

MENTAL HEALTH DAYS FOR STUDENTS: AN INCREASINGLY ACCEPTED REASON TO STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL
Public school students would be allowed to cite the need for a mental health day as an excuse to miss school, under a bill filed in the Florida Legislature for the 2020 session. The proposal is part of a growing movement in multiple states aimed at improving students' mental well-being. Read more here.
Veterans Day
November 11th is Veterans Day, noting the anniversary of the signing of the armistice which ended World War I. Each year on this day, we thank all veterans for their services in support of our country. A list of mental health resources for military veterans and those who are currently serving in the military is available here. Talking About: Veterinarian Suicide Risk
Several recent news reports have focused on the results of a study published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) focused on veterinarians and suicide. The study reported that female veterinarians are up to 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than members of the general population. While researchers have long known that doctors are more likely to die by suicide than the general population—partially due to issues like depression, anxiety, and burnout—veterinarians face a set of unique stressors.
