EVENT: An Introduction to Climate Change: What We Know and What We Can Do

Wednesday 30th October, 6:30pm-8:30pm
One Friar Gate Square, Derby
Organised by University of Derby

Climate change is one of the most troubling and potentially devastating current issues. Dr Holly Elliot, an economic geology lecturer at the University of Derby  will provide an overview on why climate change is occurring and the current and future impacts. The UK government has committed to drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and one strategy they are invoking is the use of green technologies. Critical metals such as rare earth elements are imperative to the production of these low carbon technologies. However, China currently monopolises the world’s supply. This talk will also outline research to develop sustainable exploration methods to establish a reliable and sustainable future supply of these metals.

Tom Veitch works on the Derby and Derbyshire Energy Efficiency (D2EE) project at Derby City Council. D2EE helps businesses save energy by investing in more efficient technology or through taking simple steps to make the best of existing equipment. It has supported over 400 businesses and awarded 165 grants, resulting in savings that equate to over 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Tom will talk through case studies of actions that companies have taken, and the savings that have resulted. D2EE is part-funded by the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
