Dear Parents, Students and Staff

What a “feel good” this week has been!
It has been a time of recognition, celebration and affirmation as dreams have been realised, goals met and the effect of strategizing, planning and working together has paid dividends. Our two important events – the 2019 Celebration of Excellence Evening and the Awards Assembly the next day - certainly highlighted an extraordinary, multi-faceted range of talents and achievements at the highest levels. We have a comparatively small cohort of students in the High School and yet they have been selected to represent the zone, the province and even the country. They win prizes in external, prestigious competitions, and shields and placements that the school has not achieved in decades or even a century, are slowly finding their way back to our trophy cupboards. So many new activities are under way too – like debating, Model United Nations and Current Affairs and the school teams have excelled whenever they compete.

It all talks to the culture that we have at the school – one of consistently aspiring to excellence through continuous improvement, one of daring to do, one of the valuing of team and pride in the school. Our girls are exhibiting so many of the character traits we highlight in the Round Square Discovery Framework approach to character development: tenacity, appreciation of diversity, a sense of responsibility, and ability to communicate effectively in a team, self-awareness, team skills, courage, and the ability to solve problems and think on their feet. In addition, they have learnt the lessons of discipline, courage, humility, generosity and self-sacrifice. I am so glad that this is what inspires them to persevere despite setbacks, to grow, to work hard and to continue to dream. I am so glad that the culture of toxic competition, that often accompanies the breadth and diversity of achievement that we are seeing coming through, is not our lived reality. Values like humility, gratitude, graciousness are what we focus on developing, as well as an understanding that what we do to facilitate growth and excellence is designed to shape individuals into becoming the best they can be - thus affirming a solid and authentic sense of self - rather than defining themselves in terms of beating down others in order to take their places at the top.

I salute all who received awards, and thank and acknowledge their coaches, teachers and their parents for the part they have all played in their journeys to date.

Sleeping Beauty: 2019 Ballet Concert
It was such a delight to attend the 2019 ballet concert last week - a slightly re-worked production of Sleeping Beauty. Sue de Moyencourt’s talents in mounting productions of this sort are legendary, and it is difficult to believe that she continues to surprise and excel. The choreography, settings, costumes, and adaptation of the original production was of the highest standard and our ballet dancers across the school simply stole the show! The cute factor of the little ones, who were so clearly delighted to be on stage in beautiful costumes in front of a supportive audience, was balanced by the sheer talent of our older ballerinas who showed discipline, grace, skill and poise and a feeling for dramatic presentation.

Congratulations to all involved and a special acknowledgement to Sue and Carol, the ballet teachers, the moms who sewed the costumes, and all those involved with make-up and backstage support.

Warm regards
Sue

Geography News - Grade 10

The Grade 10 Geography students presented their research to two scientists from the Department of Water and Forestry (DWAF). The girls are currently learning about the ocean currents and focusing on the cold and warm currents around our coastline. Christina Russo, a past student, and Matthew Carr presented a lecture on their current research - Eastern and Western boundary currents - and explained the process of becoming a physical ocean scientist and possible careers for our passionate Environmental and Geographical students.

Geography News - Grade 11

The Grade 11 Geography class enjoyed a lecture by Mr Peter Johnston from UCT's Department of Environmental and Geographical Science on Monday. Mr Johnston educated our girls on mid-latitude cyclones (cold fronts) and tropical cyclones with an in-depth perspective of their 'birth'/origin and their impact on us as human beings before their eventual dissipation. We are very grateful to Mr Johnston for this truly valuable talk.

Round Square Awards

We are very excited to announce the launch of Round Square Awards, starting in 2020. The development of the Round Square Discovery Framework over the past few years, and our increased number of Round Square activities, have enabled us to formulate policy structures to identify award types.

The awards are divided into two main components which need to be fulfilled to qualify for consideration. The first section comprises In-School Opportunities in which all students are involved, the Grade-specific Integrated Programmes’ and the Service Challenges. The second component of this section is the expanded offer’ which is voluntary participation in clubs and societies.
The second section is Beyond-School Opportunities which covers Round Square activities such as conferences, exchange, service projects and President’s Award programmes.

Attendance and participation in both the sections, In- School Opportunities and Beyond-School Opportunities are monitored and recorded using the relevant criteria of the Round Square Discovery Framework.

The students have been informed about the policy and the awards criteria and these have been displayed on the Round Square notice boards. The Round Square Awards, presented through a colours policy, have been uploaded onto the parents and student platforms.

Congratulations to all our students who were honored at the Celebration of Excellence Evening and Awards Assembly for their outstanding achievements in Academics, Sport, The Arts and Round Square.

The Maths Project

Ms Gomes, my Maths teacher, chats animatedly about the Maths Project at  Zonnebloem Nest High School so I decided to go and see for myself.  I had a wonderful, heart-warming experience with the students and I can’t wait for the next lesson. I learnt how to really teach and be a part of the students’ life in Maths. It was truly amazing. Eva Schreuder (Grade 9)

Art and Design News

The Visual Art and Design department donated the proceeds from The Arts Week to Intle Art Community Project in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay. Along with handing over the cheque, we were able to sit in on one of the classes, in which students are not only taught creative practices but also some business skills so that they are able to generate an income from their skill and talent.

Drama News

During Arts Week this year the whole school raised funds on “Arts Dress up Day” by coming to school as they favorite Famous Artist. The money raised from this fun event was donated to three Arts Charities, chosen by our three Arts departments. The HS and Prep Drama departments chose to support ASSITEJ’s “Take a Child to the Theatre Today” Campaign which funds theatre tickets and transport for many children who ordinarily would struggle to see a piece of theatre.

Yvette Hardie, Director of ASSITEJ SA and Faye Kabali Kagwa, ASSITEJ’s Theatre4Youth Co-ordinator in the Western Cape, came to receive our gift. There to hand it over were: Mrs Redelinghuys, Sarah Wolhuter (Head of Drama), Mihlali Sukoko, Juliet Blacher, Thandi Govender.
