When you name your product ‘La Crema’, you are already giving yourself a lot to live up to. Make no doubt, however, the winemakers here have consistently striven to produce some startlingly superb wines based on Burgundian style Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs; their aim indeed is to make the latter at least as popular as Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots.
The stunning coastal locations of their vineyards is key. They stretch from Monterey, south of San Francisco and, to the north, Sonoma, the redwood bordered Russian River Valley and further north into Oregon.
These high calibre cool climate wines are produced using authentic traditional time-honoured methods. Their chief wine-maker, Craig McAllister, a New Zealander, says of the Chardonnay “we barrel-ferment it and punch it down by hand....”.
