Our Planet: Our Business

The global business community could become a powerful force in driving responsible action for nature. We are confident that change is possible in Our Planet: Our Business, a new film inspired by the groundbreaking Netflix series, Our Planet which has won 2 Emmy awards. For the first time in Vietnam, the film will be on the big screen on 29th October in Ho Chi Minh City and 05th November in Hanoi, proudly sponsored in partnership with CGV Vietnam and Tetra Pak Vietnam.
In addition to indulging in stunning nature images, 800 corporate representatives will hear inspiring stories from business leaders to find out why we believe the business can play a huge part in reversing the loss of nature, and enjoy our corporate networking platform with beverages and refreshments from sustainable consumption models, supplied by HEINEKEN Vietnam and Pizza 4Ps.

Since going live in June this year, the film has already had over 50,000 views and 3,500 people have seen it at screenings around the world! Excellent feedback has been congregated from staff early screenings of corporates, such as HSBC, PwC, Mondi, Tesco, Coca Cola, including: “A superb, thought-provoking film”; “A wake-up call for business”; and “Beautiful and majestic...a real call to action.” Plus, there have been enquiries from 55 businesses and organizations to do screenings in 50+ countries around the world!

All those responses have added up businesses’ voices for New Global Deal for Nature and People, a joint commitment prioritizing nature and setting targets for reversing nature loss through key international agreements in 2020.

“There will be no jobs on a dead planet.” Wherever you work, whatever sector you work in, you can help create a world in which business and nature can thrive.

GREEN SUPPORT
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc declares support for a New Deal for Nature and People

It is with great honor that our WWF-Vietnam Country Director, Dr. Thinh Van Ngoc, met with H.E. Prime Minister Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who has publicly declared the Government's commitment and strong support with WWF for the development of a Declaration for a New Deal for Nature and People.

Dr. Thinh presented the Prime Minister with a photo gift of the saola, the flagship animal in our species conservation program, for which the Prime Minister expressed his close connection to, being from the Quang Nam province, home to the Saola habitat which WWF-Vietnam works to protect. This is a landmark success to publicly engage with Vietnam’s highest level minister and receive the Government' public declaration of support for conservation, setting the tone for other government ministries, businesses and individuals in Vietnam, as well as global leaders across the planet, to follow suit.

All-out support for wildlife
Ranging from spending time at the beach to exploring the hidden treasures of a national park or soaking in the beauty of the natural landscape. Can you picture that? Nature inspires us, entertains us, and provides a home for the greatest diversity of life on Earth. WWF-Vietnam works year-round with multiple partners to help ensure people and nature thrive in harmony, most recently joining up with Grab to help protect endangered species still remaining in the mountains of central Vietnam, like the saola and Asian elephants.

Believed to be a relic species of the last Ice Age, there are approximately 10 saola that may be left in the wild with zero animal in captivity. Meanwhile, a recent estimate indicates the possibility of Vietnam’s largest wild elephant population in Yok Don National Park to go extinct before the end of this century if no action is taken to protect both elephants and their habitat. With approximately 70 wild elephants remaining, Yok Don’s population is critical to the survival of wild elephants in Vietnam.

We know that you care about them as much as we do. Wherever you are, use GrabRewards to make a gift and support the protection of these iconic species, a national treasure and crucial part of an intricate ecosystem.

CONSERVATION MATTERS

Solar switch for a greener office

Joining the pioneering global network in the switch to solar power and energy efficiency, WWF-Vietnam has recently installed an 8 kilowatt (kW) solar power system in Hanoi’s headquarter office, embracing a smarter, more sustainable approach to energy. WWF-Vietnam’s solar panel installation is expected to generate enough electricity to meet one third of our electricity consumption every year. Additionally, this renewable energy system will reduce our reliance on the electricity network, which often cuts out in peak periods during summer. More importantly, using solar power also reduces emissions that cause air pollution and climate change.
Contributing to the efforts in energy sustainability, WWF-Vietnam, in August 2019, has commenced a Corporate Renewable Energy project that mobilizes champions of renewable energy (RE) in the private sector. The initiative will engage various corporates in the textile and hospitality industry and support them to assess the benefits of RE solutions, to amplify their voices and buying power in order to accelerate the uptake of RE.

HOT TOPIC

Collective efforts turn to a national model to be replicated

Initiated in 2018 from a unified idea of WWF and IKEA, Hoa Loc Sustainable Forestry Cooperative, established and operated under the Forest Owners Sustainable Development Association of Thua Thien Hue province (TTH-FOSDA) has grown into a model of sustainable forestry that the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Truong Hoa Binh recently visited and advised to expand nationwide.
“This is a great model and I recommend the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to work with Thua Thien Hue province to study how to replicate this model nationalwide”, said DPM Truong Hoa Binh at a meeting with MARD and Thua Thien Hue province.

Hoa Loc Cooperative is an initiative and ambition of WWF to transform forest smallholders, who occupied 37% of planted forests in Vietnam, to sustainable forest production and access to a responsible supply chain. The Cooperative and its business have successfully created more jobs and brought higher income for their members, as well as the surrounding community.
To date, more than 21,000 ha of plantation forest in the Central Annamites Landscape of Vietnam have been FSC certified under the support of the WWF and IKEA partnership. Aiming to scale up this impact to the national and regional levels, this partnership will ensure greater sustainability of supply chains and support local community livelihoods while minimizing deforestation and improving habitats for wildlife in key landscapes.
