Dear Colleague,

It is a General Election that was widely predicted but one thing now seems sure as the campaigning and debating gets underway, the result is difficult to call. We long for greater humility and reflection with more listening than pronouncing, but it seems instead that the level of public debate has become increasingly binary and confrontational. Our schools provide an opportunity to model a different approach. One of the core strands of our Vision is educating for community and living well together: ensuring a core focus on relationships, participation in communities and the qualities of character that enable people to flourish together. This offers a timely theme which we would do well to focus on over the coming weeks as we aspire to an education that goes beyond the short term soundbites or point scoring and offers real hope for our children and communities. Such an approach is one we can be proud of, so do please take the opportunity to invite prospective parliamentary candidates into your schools to see the quality of education Church of England schools provide and the vital role they play at the heart of communities the length and breadth of the country.

Warmest greetings.

Nigel

A prayer for the 2019 General Election

God of grace and truth,
send your Spirit to guide us
as we discover your will for our country.
Help us to discuss the issues before us
with courtesy, truth and mutual respect,
and grant that all who stand for parliament
will seek to serve the common good,
through him who came not to be served but to serve,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Anti-Bullying Week 2019: Change Starts With Us

This week schools across England have been taking part in Anti-Bullying Week and its too late late to use the resources.

The theme this year is Change Starts With Us and the campaign's aim is to help us all realise that it takes collective responsibility to stop bullying.

Small change. Big difference.

Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well in to adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Because together, we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with work together.

Change starts here.
Change starts now.
Change starts with us.

Our guidance to help schools prevent homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying can still be accessed here along with word versions of the policy templates.

This edition of the guidance was updated this summer based on
feedback received from schools.
