In terms of professional development, LinkedIn has unique features that set it apart from any other networking site. With the ability to join groups and to share and create content, professionals can showcase their contacts and subject matter expertise. By taking advantage of these features in LinkedIn, you can help enhance your status as a professional, and in celebration of National Career Development Month, here are a few tips on how to utilize these features for your benefit.

1. LinkedIn Groups
Groups are an easy way to show others visiting your page what kind of people with whom you come into contact. In order to keep a professional page, you should join relevant groups, especially those pertaining to the university you went to your industry/profession, alma mater, and place of employment. This way, when other people look at your page, they can see the different institutional brands you are connected to, making viewers more likely to come into contact with you. Also, joining different groups can open the opportunity for you to gain great connections and increase awareness of your personal brand. However, the goal is not to join as many groups as you can. It is better to have relevant and quality connections than a huge quantity of connections that do not mean anything.

2. Content Sharing
In addition to joining groups, creating and sharing posts on LinkedIn can help enhance your status as a professional. When it comes to posting , consider the following criteria:
  • Does it pertain to your profession?
  • Does it offer interesting information about the economy or a particular field?
  • Is it designed to inform people or make them think?
Because content on LinkedIn is different from content found on other social media, such as Facebook or Twitter, always make sure you are sharing or posting high-quality content that will interest the audience you are trying to attract. Similarly, your audience can also get an idea of the kind of work you do as well as the acumen you have in your professional career.

Final Thoughts
Because using LinkedIn for purposes of professional development requires a powerful profile, it is important to remember that the little things, such as joining groups and creating or sharing posts, can be very beneficial when it comes to connecting with other professionals and expanding your profile. By utilizing these free and easy to use features, you can enhance the professional status of both your profile and your career.
Thousands of student employees show up to work every day motivated by earning money to pay for basic needs or inspired to gain transferable skills to apply to future opportunities. We find ourselves in roles of hiring or managing student employees, wanting to help students grow as professionals. Regardless of why or how we acquire these roles, sometimes we don’t know if we have all of the tools we need to provide the most beneficial experience.

Questions arise:
  • What should I cover on the first day?
  • How can I assist my student employees to be career ready?
  • What should I do if I am concerned about a student?
As a manager of student employees, you are not only responsible for assigning tasks. We know you play the role of an educator, mentor and an example of a professional in a workplace.  We want to provide you with resources to help you navigate these responsibilities.

A non-credited, Canvas course will be launched in November for supervisors!  The course will serve as a wealth of information when recruiting and managing student employees, and a platform for you to recommend resources to share with colleagues in similar roles.

Supervisors of student employees will receive an email inviting them to the course. If you are not a supervisor and have interest, please contact Amanda Purchase Roberts.  In addition, please consider the HRS Annual Conference workshops highlighted above.

Together we can create accessible, meaningful and consistent student employee experiences!
