Last Week In Doodle Art:
Paint-By-Numbers
and creator Dan Robbins
Dan Robbins, the creator of the paint-by-numbers concept died in April at the age of 93. He was a package designer, working for Palmer Paints in Detroit. His boss asked him to create a coloring book in order to boost paint sales. Instead, he created the paint-by-number concept. 12 million kits were sold under the Craft Master Brand.
This is Mr. Robbins with his first paint-by-number painting. His boss thought it was too out there, so he focused on more traditional images.
In class, we discussed people's desire to experience art through paint-by-numbers, color-by-numbers, coloring books and the painting studios such as Bottle and Bottega.
Andy Warhol, the pop artist, inspired by the paint-by-numbers craze, did his own series of paint-by-number paintings called, Do It Yourself.
The Project:
The kids were given light boards, colored pencils, and magazine images to trace and create their own paint-by-number drawings (They loved the lights boards which are battery operated and can be found on Amazon).
