Weekly PTO Bulletin

Important This Week:.

From the Amy Neale Library:

Grades 3-5 had a wonderful visit with author Lesa Cline-Ransome on Friday.  Students asked some great questions about her books and research process - wish we could have had more time with her!  Her books are available for checkout from the library, so stop by if you are interested. Many thanks to the BEF’s Saker Fund for making this visit possible.

The Driscoll Student Book Awards (DSBA) are coming!  We are furiously getting this year’s nominees (which includes Lesa Cline-Ransome’s Finding Langston) ready for launch.  The DSBA is a student choice book award program run through the Library in collaboration with teachers. Students in grades 4-8 read and rate the nominated books over the year, then vote for their favorite in the spring. The book that receives the most votes will be the DSBA winner.  To see the winners from the past three years, click here.  Once again, this program is made possible through the generosity of the PTO and the Family Giving Campaign.

Did you know we have access to some great databases and digital magazines for kids?  Visit the Library tab at psbma.org for access.  Please note, a password (psbma) is required to access some materials.

Happy Reading!
Ms. Reid, Librarian

Driscoll Talks: "Talking to Kids About Race and Racism"

Tuesday, November 12th from 6 - 7:30 PM, in the Driscoll Theater

One of the challenges facing parents in today's world is the struggle to raise race conscious children. Issues of racism and inequality show up in the news on a daily basis, on both a national and a local level. How can we start a conversation with our children about race and racism?

Please join Dr. Kalise Wornum (Senior Director of Educational Equity, Public Schools of Brookline) and Dr. Suzie Talukdar (Principal of Michael Driscoll School) for a parent discussion in the Driscoll Theater on Tuesday, November 12th from 6-7:30 PM.

Driscoll Talks is a year-long series of parent workshops, sponsored by the Driscoll PTO. This year, we will be hosting three workshops focusing on issues of inequality and discrimination.  The workshops are open to all Brookline parents and caregivers.

Oct. 28 – for THE TRUTH ABOUT VAPING
From nicotine addiction to life-threatening respiratory illness, the health risks of e-cigarettes (vapes, juuls) have been all over the news lately, and Brookline is not immune. In fact, vaping among our middle and high school students is on the rise. What do parents need to know? And what can we do to help our kids fully understand that these products are not harmless? Through the generosity of a Brookline community member in collaboration with PSB/ BHS Counseling-Guidance Department, Caron Treatment Centers will present a special informational parent event on October 28 at 7 p.m. in the Brookline High School Auditorium. Please join us for this free presentation. Registration requested at https://thetruthaboutvaping.eventbrite.com
