Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

Do you look in the mirror and feel shame and disgust? Do something about it now. Forward this email to friends and tell them to click on this link to subscribe.

Yes, you are seeing things besides ghosts and Snickers wrappers.

That’s a new Podcast Gumbo logo. In truth, the old logo wasn’t a logo at all - it was my family crest. But as Podcast Gumbo has grown and hopefully will continue to grow, I needed to make a change. (I also needed stickers because everyone wants stickers.)

So over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be transitioning away from me, Paul Kondo and over to me, Podcast Gumbo.

What does this mean to you? Pretty much nothing. The two minor things to note though are:
  • The email I will use to send this newsletter starting next week will be paul@podcastgumbo.com. I don’t expect this new email to get caught in any filters but note that if you don’t see next week’s newsletter, check your spam filter.
  • There is a new site at Podcastgumbo.com. I’m transitioning all podcast-related content to that site in the next couple of weeks.
The non-minor thing to note is that if you are a sticker person, I have stickers! So…. the first ten U.S.-based people to ask for a sticker will be mailed one via the USPS. (Sorry Internationalists.)

So that’s the news of the week. Now I’m off to the Third Coast Conference. If you are there, talk to me, even if you're faking it to get a sticker.

Paul

p.s. Subscriber DJ emailed me last week to show off his wit. The RSS feed instructions at the bottom now have a sexy new name.

The Skimmer’s Hook: I never talked to my mom about periods. Have you?

Listen if you like: Mother/Daughter relationships, Surfing the Crimson Wave, cis

As I was writing that hook above, I gave myself the shivers. I’m male. I’ve never had a period so to think that the period I would’ve ever talked about with my mom would’ve been hers makes me realize I went too far in my joke.

To regress, you’re probably wondering why I’m recommending a podcast about menstruation. I was exchanging emails with my friend who is the Executive Producer of the show and explained that I’m not the target audience. She corrected me and said I was because I had females in my life.

What I loved about this episode was hearing the host having an open conversation with her mother about a topic that’s not the most fun to chat about. It’s a relationship we can all envy.

To say I learned a few things is obvious but not in the ways you would expect. They referenced ‘cis girls,’ and I will ignorantly say that although I have heard that term, I didn’t know what it meant. So after listening, I did some wiki-ing and am much less ignorant than previously. (Note that in the Extra Hot Sauce section below, I will have a link to a helpful episode on related terminology.)

p.s. Extra credit if you got the crimson wave movie reference. A great movie that my friend tried to ruin for me

Podcast: feeling my flo - Me, Mom, and Our Friend (13 mins)

Don’t Be a Zero

The Skimmer’s Hook: Have you ever had one of those days were you got NOTHING done? How can you avoid those?

Listen if you like:  Productivity, reddit

Due to Mac Power Users, I just heard about this new podcast. I need another productivity/technology podcast in my life like I need a root canal (stay tuned) but I’m a fan of Rosemary Orchard who is one of the hosts.

The thing that was the most compelling was that they brought up something I had never heard of - No Zero Days. Specifically, this reddit post and even more specifically, the reply.  I dare you to read it and not have it affect you immensely. The show, of course, talks about ways not to have these Zero Days.

Like the feeling my flo episode above, this is another example of having your world expanded when you aren’t necessarily looking for it.

And if anyone cares, I now make my bed every day. (See link in show notes.)

Podcast: Nested Folders - No(n) Zero Day (23 mins)

Who’s Your Doctor?

The Skimmer’s Hook: Can you trust doctors? These people couldn't.

Listen if you like: Horrible People, Horrible Stories, Halfs

I won’t sicken you with yet another story of how I saw this show being created earlier this year. (Just know I did.)

This show is ‘about what goes wrong in the places meant to keep us healthy.’ After listening to the first two episodes, it’s clear they picked the correct title for their show. We quickly find out that a man’s father is not who he thought it was. And then it goes south quickly and dare I say, sickeningly so.

If you don’t mind me telling you how to feel, I want listeners to focus on empathy for these people and not the F*#^ing F*#^ who did this. I have no idea where this season is going and even though I’ve been off the true crime genre for almost a year, I’m sticking with it in hopes that it’s more than just another sensationalistic podcast.

Podcast: Sick - 50% Different (24 mins)

Extra Hot Sauce

As referenced above, if you are confused about a lot of terms surrounding sex and gender and not wanting to be politically incorrect, this is a great 101 pod class from Gender Reveal. (18 mins)

The Baseball World Series ended last night or will end tonight. Congrats to that team. So why not extend your baseball pleasure nine more minutes by learning about where the seventh-inning stretch came from Ungeniused.  (9 mins)
