Meet the Locals

Canterbury Kids

Did you know that gendered clothing for children is a relatively modern concept that began in the 1920s and only became firmly established in the 1950s?  Since this time, the children’s fashion industry has rapidly grown, and we are truly spoilt for choice. As the internet expands and large chain retailers muscle in, you have to wonder what’s happening to our local boutique outlets?

Canterbury Kids was established as a family-based business a little over 28 years ago. Nestled in the heart of Maling Road, Canterbury, this historic and picturesque street is the original home for Canterbury Kids.  Over the years, the boutique has enjoyed a steady flow of customers. Renowned as a joyous shopping experience, Canterbury Kids stocks a wide range of the finest quality children’s wear, gifts and toys which are individually hand-selected to please and delight.

“My Aunt established Canterbury Kids 28 years ago.  After 14 years, I proudly took ownership and more recently made the grand leap to open a second outlet on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn. Following tradition, we still stock an exquisite range however, purchasing trends are beginning to change.  While both shops are positioned in prime locations, the escalation of internet shopping and large chain retailers create a tough environment for boutique shops such as ours”, says Monique Johnson-King (owner).

Canterbury Kids represents many of our locally owned family-based businesses.  To retain the history and local accessibility of our treasured boutique shops, as a community, it’s time to stop and rethink your next purchase. Together we can drive stronger communities as we choose to shop locally. Let Canterbury Kids be your next point of sale when it comes time to spoil and treat your little ones.

Business Name: Canterbury Kids

Address: 112 Maling Rd, Canterbury & 755 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn
