New issue History of Humanities

Issue 4.2 of 'History of Humanities' (Fall 2019) has been published. It contains a Theme section on “The Classics of the Humanities: From the Enlightenment to the Digital Age”, as well as a Forum section on “Invisible Battles: Literary Theory in Eastern Europe”, two research articles, two review essays and seventeen book reviews. Read more

Vacancy: Postdoctoral researcher in Urban Studies and Urban History

The Centre for Urban Studies and the Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development Studies (GPIO) are currently inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher in Urban Studies and Urban History to study existing and historical forms of commoning in urban public space in the project 'Common Spaces? A long-term study of the use of public spaces in Amsterdam, 1880 to the present', supervised by Prof. Robert Kloosterman (Professor of Economic Geography and Planning) and Dr. Claartje Rasterhoff (assistant professor in Urban History and Digital Methods). Read more

Call for participation: Comparative Research on Film Distribution and Exhibition World War II

Scholars are hereby invited to sign up for a hands-on symposium on film exhibition and distribution during World War II. The purpose of the symposium is threefold: (1) developing and sharing methodological expertise in compiling, analysing and comparing data on historical film programming; (2) gaining more insight in the transnational patterns of film supply and demand during the war, across belligerent and neutral countries; (3) building and strengthening a network of scholars with a shared interest in the topic. The symposium follows up on the workshop “Film Distribution, Exhibition and Consumption during the Second World War” (Leuven, 2018) by the same organisers. Read more

Upcoming events

Calderón "La vida es sueño"

31 October 9:30-19:00 University Theatre, Nieuwe Doelenstraat 301
The Research Group "Historical Theatre Research" organizes a symposium about Calderón's "La vida es sueño". The symposium opens with a translation workshop with guest Eric Coenen, translator of the latest Dutch version of "La vida es sueño".

In the afternoon, there will be presentations about the dissimination of the play within Europe, its reception histories and performance practices.

The symposium will be concluded with an interview with theatre director Olivier Diepenhorst and translator Eric Coenen in the late afternoon, followed by the screening of the 2017 theatre production of "La vida es sueño" by Toneelschuur. Read more

This CREATE Salon puts the spotlight on new approaches in social history that have been greatly facilitated by the digital turn. Two research projects focusing on the long-term history of everyday life explain how they use digital tools to study practices, and show how systematic analyses of practices contribute to a better understanding of gendered experiences in the past.

The history of Amsterdam's 'Plan Pampus' (1965)

Tim Verlaan and Peter van Dam will host a discussion with architect Frans Hooykaas, who is one of the spiritual fathers of the infamous Plan Pampus, a modernist expansion scheme for 350,000 residents that was never built.

We will discuss the plan's unfortunate history with Frans Hooykaas (in Dutch) at IJburg's Flexbieb from 19:30 onwards. Teacher Training BKO/ UTQ

Start 11 November, 10 meetings
Funded PhD candidates who started their project after September 2018 are expected to teach in their second and third year for a maximum of 0.2 fte. Within this 0.2 fte they have the possibility to earn their BKO/UTQ (University Teaching Qualification). The BKO-course is exclusively reserved for PhD candidates with a substantial teaching load which meets the BKO criteria. Read more (in English) or read more (in Dutch)

Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food

The Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food is the annual international point of assembly and an exchange of knowledge in the field of Food history in the Netherlands. It intends to stimulate debate and research that bridges the gap between different disciplines. Another aim is to transfer academic research to a wider public and stimulate research using the History of Food Collection of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The symposium is therefore targeted at both an academic and a professional audience. Read more

Call for proposals | UvA FGw Aspasia Fund 2020

The UvA FGw Aspasia Fund is currently inviting applications for the year 2020. The fund was established as an encouragement for women faculty members, to help them take a next step in their career by strengthening their research profile. To this aim, it facilitates temporary release from teaching duties. We welcome applications from women of diverse backgrounds or who have experienced a break in their career or additional responsibilities (e.g. due to leave and/or care tasks). Women academics on a teaching contract without allocated research time are also invited to apply. Deadline is 31 January 2020. Read more

Call for proposals | Cutting Edge Research Fund

The UvA Faculty of Humanities offers the funding scheme 'Cutting Edge Research Fund' that fosters (inter)national collaboration aimed at innovative, cutting edge research. The call for proposals for the Cutting Edge Research Fund is open for the academic year 2019-2020. Applications can be submitted until 30 June 2020 (NB: these dates are tentative for the time being).

Applications are invited for two types of grants: 1. Network Grants and 2. Research Fellowships. The Fund was made available by the Sustainable Humanities Programme (Duurzame Geesteswetenschappen). Read more
