TVA to host Public Information Fair on Tuesday, Dec. 3

TVA Boone Dam Project leaders and community partners will be on hand Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Daniel Boone High School to answer questions concerning the project. Last year the team held a similar event in in Sullivan County in September.

“This seemed like a great time to showcase our construction progress and the many opportunities TVA provides this region in terms of recreation and partnerships,” said Principal Project Manager Sam Vinson. “We have completed our first season of supplemental vegetation management and we are now preparing for a reassessment this spring.”

“Now that we are making so much progress in terms of construction of the underground cutoff wall, it seemed like a good time to meet with the public and answer any questions they might have,” said Construction Manager Kevin McMillion, who noted that the cutoff wall will be complete in spring of 2021 when lake level fluctuations will begin. The project is on track for completion in July 2022.

McMillion said the project is now in full swing with shifts working five days per week, 24-hours per day and often on Saturdays. McMillion said.
The format will be the same as last year with a variety of tables stationed around the room showcasing different areas of the project and TVA.

Daniel Boone High School is located at 1440 Suncrest Drive, Gray, Tenn., 37615.

ETSU Roan Scholars, Northeast State Engineering Students Tour Boone Dam

As part of TVA’s ongoing support for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, the East Tennessee State University Roan Scholars and Northeast State engineering students had opportunities to learn about the Boone Dam project first-hand during two separate learning excursions to the Dam. Students heard a project overview and learned about the importance of dam safety from Senior Program Manager, Civil Engineering, Veronica Barredo.  They were also provided career and education updates from a team of technical contractors working on the project. The students toured Boone Hydropower plant with Hydropower Technician Steve Hagood where they learned about hydropower generation and energy production at TVA.

“Our Roan Scholars were impressed with both the Boone Dam project and TVA’s emphasis on dam safety. They appreciated hearing from various groups of people working on the project and enjoyed the opportunity to learn first-hand about hydropower during their plant tour,” said Roan Scholars Director Scott Jeffress.

“Thank you for securing time in the control room this year,” said Professor Merle Litvack of the Department of Mathematics at Northeast State. “The students were excited to learn about hydropower mechanics.”

Boone Dam Breaks Food Bank Record: TVA Contractors, Workers collect more than 9,000 Pounds of Food for Second Harvest Food Bank

Four TVA Contractors went on a weekend shopping spree for the annual food drive at Boone Dam to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee. Together they gathered more than 5,000 pounds of food. In addition TVA workers and other onsite contractors including Treviicos-Nicholson Joint Venture, also raised food bringing a total of more than 9,000 pounds of food.

“This is the most food raised in a food drive by any business in Northeast Tennessee,” said Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee Executive Director Rhonda Chafin. “We are so appreciative to the TVA Boone Dam project workers who have faithfully supported us throughout the project. This food will mean so much to families who need a helping hand at the holidays.”

Women in Utilities Professionals, “WINUP” Tours South Holston Dam

The local chapter of the Women’s International Network of Utility Professionals, Inc. (WiNUP), which includes representatives from Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, recently toured South Holston Dam to learn about all of the dam’s updated Hydropower modifications.  South Holston Dam recently completed a major upgrade of their electrical wiring, generator, and other equipment to modernize the facility. As they arrived, the visitors were able to experience safety sirens that signaled the impending release of water downstream. The siren gives fishermen and others a two and a half minute warning when water is about to rise. They were also provided a tour by TVA Hydropower Technician Sam Steffey. Eleven women from TVA, AEP, Dominion Energy, Greeneville Light & Power System, and SME took part in the tour that concluded with a stop at the South Holston Overlook for photos.
