Hello Everyone…
Scampton Church congregation has been spending loads of pennies! Some months ago we gave people collection boxes asking them to “Spend a penny and flush away poverty.”
It seems that whenever we go to the toilet we now spend more than a penny because the boxes have been coming back brimming with silver coins!

Now our toilet at Scampton Church is twinned with this one at Mabilabo, Mzimba District, Malawi.
Why did we do it? Here are some very good reasons:

2.3 billion people don’t have somewhere safe and hygienic to go to the toilet.
The lack of a loo makes women and girls a target for sexual attack as they go to the toilet in the open, late at night.
Almost 1,000 children die every day from preventable diseases linked to dirty water and unsafe toilets.

663 million people live without safe water.
Children worldwide miss 443 million school days each year because of dirty water and poor sanitation.
Every year, women and girls spend 97 billion hours finding a place to go.

By twinning our toilet we have enabled a family to build a toilet, have access to clean water, and to learn about handwashing and other hygiene principles. Dignity is restored when the whole family can use a private, hygienic toilet at their home and no longer have to squat in the bush.
I don’t know about the toilet we are twinned with but often the waste can be used for compost by adding vegetation or ash after each use providing more sustainability. We have some more boxes promised so we can hopefully twin another toilet.

Personally, I would love to twin both the boys’ and girls’ toilets at Scampton Church School. Keep spending those pennies!

Family Service

Because of the special relationship that Scampton Church has with the R.A.F. Remembrance Sunday is always a special time to us. It’s right that we stop and remember the sacrifice and tragedy of the lives lost in war. It’s also important we learn from our history.
And as part of this we’ll be explaining to the children who come to our family service what remembrance means – and what those lost lives mean to us and to God.

Special Children's Communion Service

The service is on Sunday 17th November at 4pm and is designed especially for primary school children. If you have children at primary school you are cordially invited.

The Bat Box !

We invite you to grab a tin from your kitchen cupboard, bring it to any of our services, and then place it into the ('BAT BOX') at the back of church. We call it the Bring a Tin ('BAT') initiative.
We send the food to The Lincoln Community Larder whose aim is to provide basic food for people in crisis. They do this by issuing Larder Vouchers to a variety of agencies in the area who then refer people to them who are in need of assistance in the form of food. The larder provide 3 days worth of food for each person included on the voucher.
Of course the Church is always open so you could just pop in and drop a tin in the box anytime.
Lincoln Larder give advice about the best tins required by them here.

RAF Stained Glass Window - Update

A new RAF window appeal has been released to mark Remembrance Day.

With Remembrance Day soon approaching, we hope that with your help we can create this wonderful stained glass piece to commemorate all squadrons that have served at RAF Scampton.

A party of executives from the RAF at High Wycombe and the RAF Museum at Hendon visited the RAF Museum and Heritage Centre at RAF Scampton. Whilst in the area they particularly wanted to visit the Dambusters Inn and Scampton Church to look around the church building, and understand the setting for the RAF Scampton Commemorative Window. They spent time visiting the Commonwealth War Graves and were interested in hearing of the future plans for the church.

Follow up e-mails were received saying: 'Thank you for a wonderful visit – it was great to meet up in person and find out more about the project and your wonderful plans for the Church and your community.

' The warmth and values that shine from all that you showed us are incredibly inspiring, from your beautiful community church, to the German graves beside the RAF ones, to the lovely welcome note you read to us as we were leaving. The Dambusters Inn also was a real joy.'

Scampton Church / School partnership

On Thursday 17th October, the children of Scampton Church of England Primary School came to the church for their Harvest Festival. For our new starters, this will have been their first service they will have attended in this wonderful building that we share so many special times in. As they spend the next seven years with us, they will experience nativities, the story of Easter and much thanksgiving about our lives and the world we live in. It was great to team up with the church to donate lots of food items to the Lincoln Community Larder and sing the same worship songs that were sung at the last Family Service.

After the service, our older children stayed behind to explore the 'Allies in the Air' exhibition which they found fascinating. Next month, we will remember the servicemen we have learnt about during Remembrance Day commemorations as we do every year. Last year, when the 'there but not there' figures were in school, one of our pupils took it upon themselves to find out a little more about one of those servicemen represented - Hubert, Philip Solomon - and went to visit his grave in Gainsborough. To think that over a hundred years after he died whilst attacking a Zeppelin over London, that a pupil from Scampton would take the effort (through their own choice) to visit his grave is a truly special thing. It is important that we make memories, for this gives us joy, but also that we take time to remember, for this makes us proud.

Shoebox Appeal

We are again joining up with Scampton Church of England Primary School to send Christmas presents to third world countries and countries in strife. Pick up a shoebox from church at 50p each and place in it a few small items that children might like at Christmas. It will probably be the only Christmas present they get! Shoe boxes must be in by Wednesday 13th November. Drop them off at Sue's house or at School.
See if we can get more than the nine shoe boxes donated by Scampton Church last Christmas.

Gin Tasting

Friday 4th October 2019 saw our second community use of the church as a fund-raising venue!
This time it was in the form of a Gin Tasting evening hosted by our resident wine expert and writer, Brian Elliott.
Five limited edition gins were tasted and platters of bread and cheese were enjoyed by the guests who, together with a raffle, raised £316 for the church roof fund.
Again, the church lent itself as a fantastic venue for this type of event.

Scampton Community VE Day Celebrations

The Scampton VE Day Celebration plans are starting to take shape. The organising committee consisting of members from Scampton Church, The Dambusters Inn, Scampton Primary School, Pollyplatt Community Primary School and The Parish Council ar putting together a programme of events which will include a street party, dance and hog roast with a 1940's band, A ringing of Scampton Church bells at 7pm on 8th May to co-ordinate with the national bell 'ring out for peace', and an open air service in the churchyard on the 10th May.
If you wish to get involved with our 'VE day community initiative' then contact Sue, or Steve at Dambusters.

The church's weekly lottery scheme directly supports Scampton community initiatives, like the Scampton 'VE Day' 75th anniversary celebrations.
Recent beneficiaries include the village defibrillator fund, the Queens 90th birthday celebrations in the village, and the church roof fund.
Entry to the draw costs £9 per month paid quarterly in advance by standing order.
Monthly lottery prizes are usually drawn on the fourth Sunday each month, with all draws being independently drawn and witnessed. Prize money is paid electronically into the bank account of the winning ticket holder.
Winning ticket numbers and names are published in this newsletter, on the church website and notice board, and in the Village Venture magazine.
