Hello Jaycees and Friends!

This is a very special edition of The Crier! It is time to look forward to 2020 and review the candidates for our Board of Directors.  Here is this year's slate of candidates for your consideration for the 2020 Board of Directors.

Each candidate has submitted a little something about themselves and their vision of their part on the Board. They have each gained great experiences about event coordination, leadership, and personal growth through the Ann Arbor Jaycees, now they would like to give back to it.

My previous time on the Board of Directors has been so impactful to my personal and professional career and I am pleased to see the desire for chapter members to step up in leadership roles in 2020.  Join these candidates on November 7th as they go through the election process!  Of note, any positions not filled with candidates can be appointed by the President elect at anytime following the monthly meeting.

Lisa Bradley, Chairperson of the Board
Elections will be held at the November Monthly Membership Meeting on

I am incredibly honored and excited to have been nominated to serve as President on the 2020 Ann Arbor Jaycees Board of Directors.

Just a little over two years ago I was attending a work event by myself. I chose to sit down at a table with who I now know as Carena Townsend and Michael Lee. We began chatting about our careers. Once I mentioned that I was a part of the planning team for the National Cherry Festival, Carena mentioned she was a part of a group that planned the 4th of July parade in Ann Arbor. The next week I attended my first 4th of July parade meeting. I jumped into my first project as a Jaycee and I have never looked back. Little did I know how much my life was about to change.

I have been the chair of the 4th of July Parade for two years and chaired 2018 Year End Banquet. I have also enjoyed being a part of the many other projects the chapter is involved in. These experiences have taught me the importance of delegating and working as a team. I have such a personal passion for running events and the Jaycees have helped me blend my passion for events and serving the local community.  I have also enjoyed creating meaningful relationships with other community organizations.

In this upcoming year I would like to focus on you! I believe the future of this organization lies within each and everyone of you and our new members. I want to focus on growing this chapter and spreading the word about our organization throughout the Ann Arbor region.

Additionally, I want to grow our partnerships within the community. We have had such great momentum with the community building initiative and I want to see it continue. If our community is strong we will be strong. Watching Big Brothers Big Sisters talk to us about the impact we have on their organization was inspiring. I would love to continue to work with our partners as well as create new ones. I would love for us to work with organizations such as Chad Tough, Stuff the Bus, and creating essential supply bags for the homeless population. I know we can come together and support our wonderful community.

I have grown tremendously both personally and professionally in the last year and half being apart of the Jaycees from making lifelong friendship to gaining leadership skills. When I think of how we are going to accomplish our goals I often think of the phrase "it takes a village". I know we often think of it as raising children but I relate it to this organization. It takes all of us to make it this organization successful. It takes all of us in this community to make an impact and make it a great place to live and work. I know most of us have moved here but I hope you will join me in working together to make our new home the best it can be.  So won't you join my village to make this chapter, community and world a better place?

Operations Vice President Candidate
Melanie Reid
Hello Ann Arbor Jaycees!

I am deeply humbled and pleased to accept the nomination for Vice President of Operations.  With the strong encouragement of a very good friend I joined the Jaycees in 2018.  I was promised a welcoming and friendly environment to meet new people and make new friends. Thanks to you, the members, I have been met with that and so much more.

For this year I have served as Treasurer and enjoyed supporting the Jaycees in that capacity. I have seen the strength we are in numbers and how much of an impact on our community we currently have and the opportunities ahead of us.

I’m excited to learn and further our fundraising efforts to pour more into our community. Drawing on this quote as inspiration, “Giving is not just about making a donation, it is about making a difference.”(Kathy Calvin) I hope to help portray our gratitude to those that choose to support us.

Thank you,
Melanie

Director Candidate
David Herdzik

Hello fellow Jaycees.  My name is Dave Herdzik and I have been a member of the Jaycees since May of last year.  I had just moved from Upstate New York and since then the Ann Arbor Jaycees has been a great place for me to meet new friends, participate in interesting events, and give back to the community.  This past year I have become more involved in the chapter.  I helped plan the Parade this year and recently chaired the Zombie Zap event.  You can also find me at most of our volunteering events.  As a director I hope to become more involved in planning fun events for us and furthering the mission of the Jaycees.  I look forward to seeing what 2020 has in store for the Ann Arbor Jaycees.

Thank you,
Dave Herdzik
Director Candidate
Meghann Deering
I am thankful to have been nominated to serve as a Director on the 2019 Ann Arbor Jaycees' Board of Directors.  While being a member of the Jaycees for about a year and a half, I have had the pleasure to participate with wonderful fellow members in a large number of the amazing events put on by the chapter.  Additionally I have been on the planning committee for Zombie Zap for two years and am co-chairing Bountiful Baskets this fall.  In my job in particular, I see the many disparities that individuals and families in our community face and I am passionate about being able to work together with all of the incredible Jaycees to create and carry out events that have a positive impact in our community.  I view the Director position as providing the opportunity to take this passion and what I have learned in the Jaycees so far and combine it with the projects chosen throughout the upcoming year to work together with you all to have a positive, meaningful, and impactful year ahead.

Thank you,
Meghann Deering
Director Candidate
Katherine Mercieca
Almost two years ago, I came to the Jaycees looking for friendship, community service, and opportunities for personal growth. I found all three of those things and so much more. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the Ann Arbor community as a Jaycee and to serve the Jaycees as its Crier editor. In this same spirit, I hope to take that service to the next level and serve the chapter as a Director.

As you chair your projects, both new and existing, I want to be there to help you. I want to use my experience as the chair of the 2018 Scavenger Hunt and the volunteer coordinator for the 2019 Fourth of July Parade to help you realize your ideas, serve your community, make new friends, and exercise your leadership skills. As a Director, I will also draw on my experience in higher education as a Senior Admissions Counselor at the University of Michigan. I use my skills and knowledge to support young people as they apply to college. I am their advocate through the admissions process, ensuring that my most compelling and academically excellent students don’t fall through the cracks. In this same spirit, I will be your advocate, your resource, and hopefully one of many mentors you’ll encounter as a Jaycee.

Best,
Katherine
