Two Chinese airlines start direct flights from Yangon (The Myanmar Time, 30 October)

Yangon Aerodrome Co Ltd, operator of Yangon International Airport (YIA), has announced the launch of Qingdao Airlines’ direct flight between Yangon and Ningbo in Zhejiang, China. Qingdao Airlines will operate an Airbus A320 aircraft with the capacity for 180 passengers for the new service that will operate every Monday and Friday between Yangon and Ningbo, a major seaport south of Shanghai and also Zhejiang province’s second-largest city.

Government seeks to get ball rolling on mining investments (The Myanmar Time, 29 October)

Myanmar will boost efforts to seek more foreign investments in the resource sector in 2020. Due to the refugee crisis in Rakhine over the past two years, some western countries have been hesitant to invest in the country. To address this, the government launched a 20-year Myanmar Investment Promotion Plan (MIPP) with a “Look East Policy”. However, investments under the plan have not met up with expectations.

Myanmar rushes power plant projects to avoid more blackouts (Nikkei Asian Review, 28 October)

Myanmar’s government is trying to address the country’s worsening power shortage, aiming to add 1,072 megawatts of new electricity generating capacity ahead of elections in late 2020.

Myanmar to launch card payment system with buses in Yangon by year-end (Xinhua, 28 October)

Myanmar's Yangon Bus Service (YBS) will implement a card payment system to replace the present cash box system to facilitate passengers in taking buses by the end of this year.According to the Yangon Region Transport Authority Monday, more than 1,500 buses will get the e-ticketing machines in the initial stage.


Chinese Company Debarred by World Bank Wins Bid for Yangon Power Plant (The Irrawaddy, 25 October)

Chinese state-owned enterprise Energy Engineering Company has won a contract with the Myanmar Ministry of Energy and Electricity (MOEE) to build a 150-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant in Yangon’s Ahlone Township. The state-owned company was barred from World Bank projects in September for falsifying documents in its bid for an electricity tender in Zambia.

The Victorian Government Trade and Investment (VGTI) international network underpins Victoria’s offshore investment attraction and trade promotion operations, supports government and business engagement between Victoria and relevant market, and coordinates Ministerial visits to the country.
 
The VGTI offices focus on supporting foreign investment into Victoria, , the facilitation of exports from Victoria, and more generally the promotion of Victoria as an international destination for business, students and tourists. VGTI offices are currently located in Beijing, Bengaluru (Bangalore), Boston, Chengdu, Chicago, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, London, Mumbai, Nanjing, New York, San Francisco, Santiago, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, and Washington D.C.

In Southeast Asia, VGTI offices are located in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Singapore. The main activities are to:
  • Represent Victoria’s interests in South East Asia;
  • Provide information and assistance with investment attraction export development, innovation capability, tourism, education, business and skilled migration and bilateral relations.
  • Facilitate the ongoing development of cultural and business linkages and Government-to-Government exchanges to improve mutual understanding and adoption of international best practice.
