TALES FROM THE FRONT LINE
Over the last few months, I have gained some new insights that might be useful for parents and graduates:
  • Most of our graduates come to us not knowing what type of job will suit them best. I elaborate on how candidates can easily figure this out on page 65 of The Student Book

  • Many candidates search for companies when conducting their job search, however, it is more effective to search by job title/type instead because of the new Google jobs search feature that compiles a list of relevant jobs from around the internet.
WHAT I LEARNT AT BENEDEN SCHOOL
Last month, I was delighted to be invited to give a talk at Benenden girl’s school in Kent. Overall, I was very impressed with how engaged and switched on the students were with regards to employability.

Here are some key insights I took away from the talk:
  • The students were very up to speed about the need to gain work experience and apply for internships. This is very encouraging because many candidates that struggle to find a graduate-level job lack work experience.

  • It seems as though the students were unaware of how tough the competition is to land a graduate-level job until I illustrated it with this figure: 800 000 students graduate each year, however, Times top 100 companies only hire 20 000 graduates.

  • Most attendees were shocked to discover that pursuing a Master’s degree after their undergraduate studies will not help them to land a graduate job unless the Master’s is in something very specific. Check out our recent blog post entitled: Should I do a Master’s degree, for more information.

  • Finally, another key insight I shared with the students was the rise in the number of graduate jobs that require candidates to have digital skills. So far this year we have helped over 60% of our graduates to get digital-related roles.
THE RISE OF THE VIDEO INTERVIEW
Video interviews are now replacing telephone interviews.

Like other types of interview, adequate preparation is vital. We have designed a video interview course that gives candidates the opportunity to practise conducting recorded video interviews. We are the only coaching company that offers this service.

As a part of the course, we provide constructive feedback to help candidates to improve their technique.
