Scripture Readings for this Sunday:

Psalm 65
2 Timothy 4: 6-8, 16-18

Have you ever had conversations, the memories of which have stayed with you for years? I have such a memory from 30+ years ago. I was working on my doctorate and the conversation was with my horn teacher. He and I were talking about the recital requirements to earn my degree. One of the requirements was that in each recital at least one major work had to be from memory.

In the midst of the conversation about memorization my teacher said, “You really can’t claim a piece of music as your own until you have it memorized.” I was reminded of this conversation several Sundays ago. The sermon hymn was “Amazing Grace” and I was noticing how many of you in the congregation were singing this hymn without looking at the hymnals.

You parishioners had memorized this hymn. You had made it your own. I wonder how many other hymns you have also made your own?

The same is true of poems, and scripture lessons. One of the arguments that can be made for memorizing scripture is by so doing we actually are making these verses part of our inner lives. I bet most of you know by heart those scripture verses which have been of comfort during those difficult “nights of the soul” we all have had.

You might not remember the verse location, or all the exact words, but I bet if one began reciting John 3: 16, you could join in, “For God so loved the world….” Or Romans 8: 38, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, … nor anything will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Or, the entirety of Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want….”

I encourage / nudge / invite / challenge each of you to take
on this spiritual discipline—memorize scripture verses. Begin small, and with those passages which speak most powerfully and eloquently to you. If you are comfortable, ask those closest to your heart what are the scripture passages which keep them going (and be sure to ask why!). If you continue the discipline of memorizing scripture, making these passages part of your inner self, you will be changed. However, be forewarned. Change can be frightening—especially in the first hundred years of life!

See you at worship! tp
