WVU Honors share their knowledge through peer tutoring

The WVU Honors College hosts HONR 245, an honors and service-learning course, where students participate by being a peer tutor and mentor for students of Morgantown High School, Preston High School and Grafton High School.

HONR 245 students also work with members of the Upward Bound program at WVU where students can share their college experience with high school students who will be first generation college students.

Tutoring is so much more than teaching. Students of HONR 245 learn “the backgrounds and experiences of the students they tutor, the school and community they encounter, and the state of education in West Virginia and across the nation,” said Landon Southerly, WVU Upward Bound Director.

Students of this course learn, mentor, serve and reflect on a service project that is more than just tutoring.

The Ways of Caring mural brings community enrichment through public art

Morgantown Murals, the organization that creates these murals, captures the attention of viewers through colorful and meaningful works of art painted on buildings.

The Ways of Caring mural reflect leaders who represent community diversity. The presence of this mural brings about memories and stories about those depicted in the murals.

The Ways of Caring mural is a project established by Eve Faulkes’ Design for Social Impact class and the Downtown Task Force to provide a welcoming atmosphere to Downtown Morgantown.

This mural is the result of hard work and time of many volunteers. Grants fund the equipment needed to create these masterpieces.

The Ways of Caring mural is located at Milan Puskar Health Right, along Wall Street.

Morgantown Murals would love to have professional muralists and more volunteers to join their team. Those interested in volunteering can follow their Morgantown Murals Facebook page or register on
