Signals of Success & Failure:
TWI® (Team Work Index) is a Cohesion Analytics measure for an organisations recruitment philosophy/strategy over the long-term. It is a strong indicator of long-term performance and can be manipulated through recruitment practice to impact performance outcomes. Recruitment philosophy is often a reflection of organisational governance. This is as applicable to the corporate environment as it is to sport. The strength of TWI® as an analytics tool is that it is measured prior to any performance outcomes e.g. the season starting.

TWI® is a driver of In-Season Cohesion (the amount of game-by-game Cohesion a team can create) as well as a number of other critical in-season Cohesion markers. The higher a team's TWI® the higher capacity they have to create In-Season Cohesion and subsequently a greater level of on-field performance. With low TWI®, it makes it increasingly difficult to get consistent high level results.

As seen below, there is a strong relationship between TWI® and In-Season Cohesion in overall performance in Australian Rules Football. To be consistently higher on the premiership ladder a team needs to either have high TWI®, In-Season Cohesion or ideally both. If your team is not in the top right quadrant of the chart then success in September is largely out of the question (tap the image below to see the range of performance vs the Key Cohesion Markers).
The relationship between performance and the Key Cohesion Markers in Australian Rules Football 2010 - 2019.
The relationship of TWI® to overall performance in 2019/18 was strong in the sporting competitions covered:
  • 2019 NRL Minor Premiers - 1st for TWI®
  • 2019 AFL Premiers - 4th for TWI®
  • 2019 Super Rugby Champions - 1st for TWI®
  • 2019 UK Super League Champions - 1st for TWI® (with special mention to the runners up who had the largest increase this season)
  • 2018/19 English Premiership Rugby Champions - 3rd for TWI® (runners up 1st for TWI®)
  • 2018/19 Pro14 Rugby Champions - 1st for TWI®
  • 2018/19 Top 14 Rugby Runners up - 2nd for TWI®
  • While not the highest, both the Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks had the highest jump in TWI® over the last 2 seasons in the NBA.
Relationship of TWI® and Share Price.

In sport TWI® is a reflection of the Governance of an organisation. This is also seen in the Corporate environment. TWI® within an organisation, specifically the Governance/Senior Executive level can influence performance outcomes including the Share Price of the organisation.

In July 2017 GAIN LINE Analytics set up 2 Research Share Funds. A group of Australian ASX listed companies was chosen blindly and measured to determine the TWI® of the Governance/Senior Leadership. High TWI® companies were put in a "High Cohesion Fund" and low TWI® companies were put in a "Low Cohesion Fund".

As of October 2019 (27 months) the "High Cohesion Fund" had increased in value 62.48% compared to the ASX All Ords and the "Low Cohesion Fund" had decreased in value -29.24% compared to the ASX All Ords.

The drivers behind the rise and fall of Share Price are multi factored but like in sport there are signals showing that the TWI® of the company can influence the overall performance - and in this case the performance has been manifested in the Share Price.
