The Showroom is honoured to continue the Collective Intimacy live programme at 63 Penfold Street with a poetry session by Inua Ellams followed by a set of performances by Helen Cammock.
Our current exhibition Em'kal Eyongakpa’s Tahjèsè #3i / Barɨŋ Báchɔ́Kɔrɔk #4, a sculptural and sound environment, will be open until 8.30pm.

Inua Ellams (born in Nigeria, 1984) is an internationally touring poet, playwright, performer, graphic artist and designer heavily Influenced by hip hop music and poetry by the Romantics. Musicality and heightened mellifluous speech mixed with Nigerian storytelling has come to typify his work. Once described as the love child of Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and John Keats, his reoccurring themes are identity, displacement and destiny. He is an ambassador for the Ministry of Stories, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and founded the Midnight Run, a nocturnal urban excursion. He has published four books of poetry, his first play The 14th Tale was awarded a Fringe First at the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival, and his fourth play Barber Shop Chronicles sold out its run at England’s National Theatre. He is currently touring An Evening With An Immigrant and working on The Half God of Rainfall – a new play in verse.

Helen Cammock (born in Staffordshire, 1970) is an artist working across moving image, photography, writing, poetry, spoken word, song, performance, printmaking and installation. She is interested in the intersections between image, language and duration. Histories, storytelling and the questioning, excavation, re-interpretation and re-presentation of lost, unheard and buried voices are often re-ignited and woven together across different mediums. Current exhibitions include The Long Note as part of Turner Prize 2019 and Che Si Può Fare at Collezione Maramotti, Italy. She studied at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, London.

Collective Intimacy is a live programme that takes us on a journey in which multiple and trans-located narratives of the current Black experience and their futuristic imaginaries are the point of departure for a cosmopolitan view of the world. Presented in collaboration with The Vinyl Factory, The Store X and, Collective Intimacy takes place on Saturdays in October at 180 The Strand within the Black Image Corporation installation by Theaster Gates, and every other Thursday 10 October – 5 December at The Showroom. Across these two sites, both the spectacular and the everyday merge in an interconnected programme featuring artists, musicians, designers, writers, thinkers, collectives and members of the public who are invited to distort notions of selfhood and togetherness.
