Smile, It's Art--Barbara's Whimsical Art
October 31 through November 26

Barbara Krause is a self-taught artist from the Village of Liverpool and a member of the CNY Art Guild. Her motto, "Life is Good. Drink the Wine. Smile – It’s Art," describes the feelings she hopes her work inspires in those who view it. Ms. Krause's nature-themed acrylics are on exhibit at Maxwell this month. See more at her website.

NaNoWriMo—National Novel Writing Month
November 1 through 30
 
Launched in 1999, NaNoWriMo inspires its more than 300,000 participants with pep talks, a huge and supportive online community, and a host of web-based writing tools to help each writer produce a 50,000-word novel. Set goals, track your progress, and connect with other aspiring authors during this free month-long inititative. Maxwell Memorial Library in Camillus is a Come Write In space, where adults and youth are welcome to pursue their creative dreams and write the first draft of their novel anytime the library is open. Author Tommy Orange is the November 12 guest lecturer at this year's Rosamond Gifford Lecture Series, sponsored by the Friends of Central Library. His novel, There There, is the 2020 CNY Reads One Book selection.

Get a head start on reading this and other works by Orange so you'll be prepared for CNY Reads facilitator Alan NaPier's discussion of There There at Maxwell Library on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 2 PM.

Unraveling Yarns Book Club
All book selections have a mystery or suspense theme. Bring your needlework and unravel a different plot each month. Non-knitters are also welcome.

There are many myths about what copyright allows or forbids, and the ease of copying and sharing material that technology provides has made it necessary for everyone to sweep those myths away and get a better understanding of copyright’s reality. Tech Librarian Pete Schult will look at the general outlines of copyright law, some resources for getting more detailed information, and Open Culture licensing (like Creative Commons and various so-called Copyleft licenses) that creators use to clarify terms for reusing their creations.

Greeting Cards for Winter

Due to the popularity of this program, there are two sessions--
sign up for either 5:30 or 6:30 PM.

Make two winter-themed greeting cards with Alyson Esposito. There will be one snowflake design and one floral. Choose from a variety of holiday and all-occasion sentiments. Complete the designs using rubber stamps and colored pencils and your choice of several sentiments.
Free. Registration required as each class is limited to 10.

Two Brothers' Light (TBL) is a non-profit organization that promotes mental wellness, suicide prevention and awareness. It holds peer-based support groups for individuals affected by suicide and other mental health issues. These meetings are free and open to anyone seeking information on mental health concerns, suicide prevention and awareness, alternatives to suicide, or grief support for those affected by suicide.

This program allows children to practice reading aloud without the fear of being criticized or corrected.

They must be checked out from and returned to the Maxwell circulation desk.

Go to On the Shelf>Cake Pans for photos of the pans, general baking instructions, and instructions and decorating ideas for some of the individual pans. No small kids? There are pans for grown-ups, too, such as tiers, layers, checkerboard, and springform.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten
To promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers as well as to encourage parent and child bonding through reading, the 1000 Books Foundation has issued a challenge to parents to read 1000 books to their children before kindergarten. Stop in at Maxwell Library to get your first reading log and informational materials, and start reading! Kids can track their progress by looking for their personalized owl stickers on the wall near the picture books.
Friends of Maxwell Memorial Library

Being a Friend of Maxwell is a great way to support the library. The group sponsors library programs and fundraising events.

Are you planning on visiting a New York State or an Onondaga County park? Borrow a NYS Empire Pass or an Onondaga County Park Pass from Maxwell Library before your trip. Both passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis to patrons over the age of 18 with OCPL library accounts in good standing. They may be checked out for three days, and must be returned in person at Maxwell. Call or stop in for more details.
