INCLUSION

Fall 2019

Hello friends,

Tomorrow, October 24, marks the 74th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. It's a day to remember the incredible impact that the U.N. has had around the world protecting human rights, maintaining international peace and security, providing humanitarian aid, and promoting sustainable development.

In September 2015, the U.N. General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Disability is referenced in multiple parts of the SDGs, specifically in the parts related to education, growth and employment, inequality, and accessibility.

Via our various programs and service partners, supported in part by the generosity of supporters like you, we're working every day to help ensure that these goals can be achieved, by increasing access to better assistive products and services for the one billion children, women and men with disabilities.

Below, you can read about just a couple of ways we and YOU are making an impact.

With gratitude,

David Murphy, Executive Director
1,100 wheelchairs delivered in the last quarter
CLASP is a USAID-funded program being implemented by UCP Wheels that’s making it easier for people with disabilities in developing countries to get access to wheelchairs and other assistive mobility devices. Over the last three months, CLASP has shipped over 1,100 units to partner organizations in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, India, Morocco, South Africa, Tajikistan, Togo and Zimbabwe.

Shonaquip provides appropriately fitted wheelchairs, capacity building and advocacy programs for children and adults with disabilities in South Africa.
Now Rahmeh feels just like her classmates
Rahmeh, 8, lives in Jordan, about 30 miles outside of the capital, Amman. Rahmeh, who is in 3rd grade, wanted to sit at a desk just like her classmates. Unfortunately, her wheelchair would not fit and did not have a tray, so she had to sit in an uncomfortable plastic chair. Worried about the effect this was having on her posture, Rahmeh's parents approached CLASP service partner, the Al Hussein Society (AHS). The team at AHS did an assessment of Rahmeh's physical and environmental needs and selected a Motivation Moti Go wheelchair as the most appropriate chair.

Now Rahmeh has a comfortable and supportive wheelchair that she is happy to sit in all day. The new chair also enables her to move around the school building more easily. Judging by the smile and the thumbs up, Rahmeh is enjoying her newfound independence!
Dani and Magic of Disney!
Before he flew home to El Salvador last month, Dani Chavarria, our Wheels in Motion Gala special guest, was able to fulfill the dream of every 8-year-old with a fabulous day out at Disneyland. The expression on his face as he watched the fireworks is, we think you'll agree, the sweetest thing ever!
