CMO Vacancies a Cause for Concern

CMO vacancies at large law firms may be a cause for concern, says Calibrate Legal’s Jennifer Johnson Scalzi. The Calibrate CEO was interviewed for a December 6, 2019 American Lawyer article on CMO vacancies at elite law firms.  The article focused on the announcement of a new CMO at  Nixon Peabody, but also highlighted the fact that, at time of writing, more than a dozen Am Law 200 firms had been making do without a first-chair marketer—some of them for more than a year.

New Report Reveals Opportunities for Improvement on Digital Marketing Strategy for Law Firms
By Jamie Diaferia and Jennifer Johnson Scalzi

In this Law Firm Marketing column in the New York Law Journal, Jamie Diaferia and Jennifer Johnson Scalzi write: Not long ago, many legal marketing positions were filled by people who held various administrative roles in firms and transitioned into marketing roles with little to no formal training in the field. But that gap is clearly closing. Still, there is more work for law firms to do. That’s particularly true in digital marketing.

Seven Signs of an Innovative Marketing Leader

Innovation has become central to the business agendas of many law firms today say Jennifer Johnson Scalzi and Gordon Braun-Woodbury.  "We’re seeing this trend reflected in talent, recruiting and financial priorities across the legal profession.  More and more, firms are establishing innovation funds and creating senior job titles that include the word “innovation.”  Some are even setting up full departments devoted to it."

Nowhere is this truer than in legal marketing and business development – a discipline that thrives on innovative approaches. When we interview candidates for legal marketing/BD positions, we look for people with an innovation mindset, who can recognize and realize opportunities to do things better, faster, cheaper and with greater impact on the firm.

The First Thing Great Decision Makers Do

Calibrate Legal’s Kathryn Whitaker spoke recently at LMA Tech West on common data biases that distort results and how to avoid them. The talk was well-received, and we have seen an increase in interest from clients on data biases. Given that, this month we wanted to share an article from HBR on data-driven decision making.

“Many decision-makers think they’re being data-driven when they look at a number, form an opinion, and execute their decision. Unfortunately, such a decision will be ‘data-inspired’ at best. Data-inspired decision-making is where we swim around in some numbers, eventually reach an emotional tipping point, and then decide. There were numbers near that decision somewhere, but those numbers didn’t drive the decision. The decision came from somewhere else entirely. It was there all along in the unconscious biases of the decision-maker.”
