In the last 20 years, every county in California has experienced at least one federally declared flood disaster. Floods are dangerous and can have a long-lasting, damaging impact on families, homes, communities, the environment and the economy.

Flood preparedness is critical to California communities. This week, Oct. 19-26, marks California Flood Preparedness Week. It’s important to know whether you live in a flood zone, what type of flooding is likely in your area and how a flood could impact your home. Take time this week to be aware, be prepared and be ready to take action in the event a flood occurs.

BEFORE A FLOOD
  • Keep all storm drains, roof gutters, pipes, downspouts, driveway culverts and drainage ditches free of debris.
  • Remove any dead trees or brush.
  • Ensure drainage is directed toward the storm drain system.
  • If gutters are filling, use a rake, broom or shovel to remove debris from the storm drain opening, being sure to leave the grate in place.
  • Know where to obtain sandbags to protect your home and property. You can find a local map of sandbag resources at www.zone7water.com/images/pdf_docs/flood/Sandbag_Stations_Z7_Oct_2019.pdf.
  • Keep your car fueled and disaster supplies handy.
  • Make an emergency kit that includes phone numbers, medication, flashlight, batteries and a radio.
  • Make an evacuation plan. Keep in mind that in a flood, you may not be able to drive on roads you usually take.
  • Check into the National Flood Insurance Program at www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program. Most homeowner insurance policies don’t cover this type of flooding.
  • Sign up for local emergency alerts at www.acgov.org/emergencysite/.
DURING A FLOOD
  • Stay informed by listening to the news.
  • Communicate with family members if you leave your home.
  • Evacuate if you are directed to do so. Help may not be able to reach you later if you stay home.
  • Never try to drive through a flooded street. Just 6 inches of water can stall or float most cars. If you can’t leave in your car, go to the highest area in your home or building.
