BORDER STAR DRAGON NEWS

Hello, Border Star Families! Welcome to fall!

There's always so much going on this time of year, so it seems like a good time to send out some school news and PTA info.

You are receiving this because you were either on our distribution list last year or have joined the PTA or the PTA’s New Parent Communications list this year. If you no longer wish to see these emails, please unsubscribe.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Monday, November 4 -- Return fundraiser packets
Monday, November 4 -- Restaurant night at Chipotle by the Plaza Library, 4 - 8 pm
Thursday, November 7 -- General PTA meeting in the cafeteria (dinner at 5:30 and meeting at 6:00)

PICTURE DAY

Picture Day was October 15, but if you missed it or you just don't like the first round of pictures, there will be a retake day on November 26 (according to LifeTouch's website).  And if you forgot to order your packet of pictures from the first picture day, you will have another chance. Each student who had their picture taken will get an access code with their portrait ID in the next week or so, and this will allow you to order photos.

HALLOWEEN

The PTA is hosting a Trunk or Treat from 5:00 to 6:30 in the school parking lot on Sunday, October 27. Bring candy to give away at your vehicle and dress up the kids to walk around to all the other trunks to receive treats.

The school Halloween celebration will be on Thursday, October 31st.  The students will be able to put on costumes that afternoon and have a Halloween parade (outside if the weather is nice and through the halls if it's too cold or wet) at 2:00. Classroom parties will be from 2:30 to 3:15.  If your child doesn't participate in Halloween activities, there will be an "un-party" with Ms. Parker in the library, which is also a fun break from the normal classroom activities. Just let your child's teacher know if you want them to head to the library during the Halloween activities.

A note on costumes: If you child wants to bring a costume to school, make sure it easily fits into your child's backpack, that you child can put it on himself or herself, and that there are no masks that cover the face or weapons.

Room parents will be meeting this Wednesday to plan classroom parties, so be on the lookout for emails from those parents seeking volunteers and donation items for the parties.

JOIN THE PTA

There’s still time to become a member, and it’s only $5 a person! Joining the PTA gives you a voice. As an active PTA member, you can have a say in how the PTA raises and spends money, and who should be nominated and serve in our annual officer elections.

FALL BOOK FAIR

The book fair was a great success and brought in a little over $900 dollars to our school. Border Star families also bought (or donated money for) nearly 100 books for classroom teachers, which I know are very appreciated. Special thanks to Kate Bender, who organized the book fair and worked many shifts at the school, and to all the volunteers who worked as our cashiers last week.  We will likely host another book fair in the spring, so if you missed out this time, or need to get the next book in a series, you'll have a chance to then!

FALL FUNDRAISER

Our Fall cookie dough fundraiser is going on now through November 4. Make sure fundraising packets with all the money collected for items ordered is returned to you child's teacher on or before that day. The cookie dough is pretty good, and comes in handy for office celebrations, neighborhood parties, church dinners, and cold, gloomy days.  This new cookie company (Otis Spunkmeyer) packages the dough differently than the previous company, so it's much easier to just take out the number of cookies you want to bake and keep the rest frozen. The fundraiser also includes holiday candies and decorations, as well as magazine subscriptions.  You can renew existing subscriptions this way, too. And if you're really not into any of that stuff, feel free to make a cash donation to the PTA instead. We get 40% of anything you buy through the fundraiser, but 100% of cash donations!

SOURCES OF INFORMATION

Last year, every class sent home a Wednesday folder with students, which included a weekly “Principal’s Page,” information from the classroom teacher, and information from the PTA and other groups about upcoming events. Mr. Rhyne does not plan to send home weekly newsletters this year (in part to save paper), so teachers can now send home information as they see fit. So parents, check back packs everyday—not just Wednesdays! The PTA will occasionally send home paper flyers for our events, but we will also try to cut back on printing.  Look for these other means of communication throughout the year:

  • PTA bulletin board (outside of Rm 003 by the back door near the playground)—we will post a calendar, which will be updated monthly, as well as flyers for upcoming events
  • Flyers—we will still hang flyers and posters for events around the school.  When you walk by, snap a picture of it with your smart phone so you can always have the info handy.
  • Phone blasts—Mr Rhyne likes using the phone blast system. We will send important PTA info through him on that system as well.
  • PTA website—In the past, this site has been used primarily as a landing page for memberships, special spirit wear purchases, and donations. But we’re going to try to keep it updated with important event info this year as well.
  • PTA meetings—Attending meetings will be the best way to get the inside scoop on school happenings.
  • These PTA emails—Don’t worry, we won’t flood your inbox.  But we’ll try to get the most import stuff out this way.
  • Facebook parent page — This closed (and unofficial) Facebook group is open to all parents to discuss school and community issues, ask questions, and build community. You'll need to provide a child's teacher's name to join.
  • Email - You can always just email us at borderstarpta@gmail.com
