India celebrated the festival of giving and so did we.

Daan Utsav - The Giving Festival

Every year on October 2 through October 8, India celebrates the festival of giving called the “Daan Utsav” to encourage the spirit of generosity. This year, in collaboration with Reliance Metro One, Red Dot Foundation - Safecity participated in Daan Utsav. Our award-winning short-film “Nirbhaya Mai, Asifa Main” directed by Supreet K Singh, COO and Director Safecity, played at the Andheri Metro Station throughout the Daan Utsav with the aim of spreading awareness about gender-based violence among commuters.

The Safecity team met with the metro commuters at Andheri Bank of Baroda Metro station for a discussion around sexual harassment and abuse. Commuters were encouraged to break their silence on sexual violence by using the Safecity App as a medium. They were guided through the reporting of their personal experiences with respect to the different kinds of harassment that they had encountered in the past.

A skit at Kasewadi, Pune

At Kasewadi Community- a skit about Sexual Harassment and its impact on the life of the survivor Safecity celebrated Navratri with the Kasewadi Community, in Pune on October 5 by performing a skit about Sexual Harassment and its impact on the life of the survivor. Team Safecity was preparing for this skit for weeks. After the member of the Kasewadi's Community Mandal introduced Safecity, we performed the skit on Sexual Harassment and its impact on the life of the survivor.

We also used slogans to grab the attention of people. A lot of people gathered and everyone watched the skit with keen interest. In fact, the audience loved the skit so much that they asked us to perform the skit once again. Hence, we performed the skit again. When asked for the feedback, the audience mentioned that they found the theme of the skit very relevant as sexual harassment is an issue in their community too. They also felicitated team Safecity with coconut and a flower as a token of appreciation!

Laws Through Cartoons

On a rainy Saturday morning in Mumbai (6th July), Safecity hosted the Laws Through Cartoons workshop at ISDI Mumbai. With the aim of creating more awareness about the law and legislation in India in an interactive, creative and fun way, we collaborated with Nappinai & Co., Advocates, who explained the law, and ISDI (Indian School of Design and Innovation) Mumbai, who taught the participants to illustrate. This workshop was supported by the Consulate General of Canada in Mumbai.

The workshop began with a warm welcome by Etienne Lambert, the Consul for Economic, Political and Public Affairs at the Consulate General of Canada in Mumbai. In his welcome address he emphasized, “There is a lot of work to be done in creating more awareness of the law and its complexity in order to create social change, to help individuals know their rights all around the world. This workshop is an initiative to bring together like-minded individuals for the same.”

Participatory Training in Human Rights Education

Safecity co-hosted a two-day certificate course in Human Rights Education with One Future Collective on 27-28th June 2019.

This training was supported by Canada in India (High Commission of Canada). The response, the discussions and the learnings have truly been inspirational.
