Thought of the Week

With thanks to David Prins

Most books start at page one. In contrast, each tractate of Talmud starts at page two. The Torah starts with the letter “bet” which corresponds to the number two. The significance of each number is found in the song ‘Who knows one?’, sung on Seder nights. One is G-d. Two are the tablets of stone representing the moral and ethical code to which we should adhere. Starting our tractates of Talmud at page two and our Torah with the letter “bet” reminds us that there is a Number One above us.

There have always been despots and dictators in change of undemocratic countries. Nowadays in the free Western democratic world we also have leaders who think they are number one, having lost sight of the real Number One. We have (by way of example) a US President facing possible impeachment, a UK Prime Minister found to have prorogued parliament illegally to suit his own ends, and the Australian press claiming that governments are unnecessarily withholding important information from the public, to suit the governments’ own needs.

Knee-jerk reaction in complex cases is never appropriate. Careful analysis of all the facts and circumstances to determine who has the moral high ground is important. But in each case there must be a significant player who is acting the way they do because they think they are number one. The world needs to relearn the need to act in accord with morality and ethics signified by the number two, and to regain universal understanding of the essence of the real Number One.
