Justin Trudeau’s election victory reveals divisions across Canada

  • Late Monday night, the results of the Canadian election showed Justin Trudeau’s victory, in spite of a loss of party seats, establishing Trudeau as the Prime Minister of a minority government
  • The Liberals (Trudeau’s party) are projected to win 157 seats, 13 seats short of the majority. The Conservative Party has gained 95 seats since the last election, an increase which is expected to block much of Trudeau’s legislation in his second term
More information: Canadian federal elections are formally announced by the governor general, who, upon request by the prime minister, dissolves the current parliament. Candidates then run for every single seat in the House of Commons, turning 338 local elections into a greater nation-wide event

SCIENCE ⚗️

South Pole ozone hole is the smallest on record

  • NASA scientists have noticed the shrinkage of an ozone hole near the South Pole. This fall, the hole has been measured to 3.6 million square miles, down from a peak of 10.3 million in 2006
  • Despite the initial positive reaction, scientists have concluded that the decrease has more to do with recent ‘freakish’ weather in the arctic than any pollution reduction
More information: Earth's ozone layer shields life on our planet from harmful solar radiation. The more ozone over the hemisphere results in less ultraviolet radiation at the surface placing living beings on Earth in danger
