Out in Nature at Potomac Overlook Park...

Mt Daniel school logoNaturalists are guiding groups of Mt. Daniel kindergartners on trails through Arlington's Potomac Overlook Park. Students are able to explore leaves, trees, seeds, and animals that change with the season. Groups are hiking, visiting the frog pond, and watching docents handle snakes in the nature center.

...And in the Stacks

Kindergarten classes are also taking their annual field trips to Mary Riley Styles Public Library, borrowing books with their very own library cards. The students enjoy read-alouds by the librarians and then are able to browse the shelves to find books they would like to check out and read at home.

Seniors Benefit from Career Chats

George Mason school logoBIE logoThrough the efforts of BIE (Business in Education), nearly 50 community volunteers were on hand Wednesday morning for Career Chats with seniors during Wild Horse Wednesday. Students were able to sign up for the career areas they are interested in, and attend a session with several speakers in related fields.
The group of professionals included architects, the chief of police, technology leaders, an Olympic gold medal winner, State Department employees, public defenders, city planners, business leaders, psychologists, educators, lawyers, and many more. Students were inspired by the variety of career paths and also learned about transitions from school to work.

Calendar Committee Tackles Annual Big Squeeze

FCCPS logoIt's a LOT to juggle!  180 teaching days, holidays, planning time, and athletics schedules.  Add to that all of the comments from public hearings and emails, the Citizen Engagement Session, and School Board questions and answers received over the last several weeks.  The Ad Hoc Calendar Committee spread out throughout Central Office yesterday to figure out how to squeeze all that information into next year's calendar. They meet again in two weeks to finalize several options including pre and post-Labor Day starting days. Those options will be presented to the School Board and included in a survey that will open to the community in November.

M*U*S*I*C Days Workers for Hire
Fundraiser for Spring Music Trip

FCCPS logoMusic students are up for hire! They are participating in the Many Useful Students In our Community fundraiser where they are hired by you for all kinds of jobs through a central website. Think about jobs you need done this fall including help with yardwork, a party, a computer or holiday decorations, or even that always tough-to-fill babysitting slot for a night out. You will be matched up with the students for the job! There are many other job suggestions, see the flyer here. The fundraiser runs for seven weekends, starting this weekend through early December, and helps students cover the cost of the band and chorus's trip to Florida. See the Band Boosters website to sign up.

Planning for area adjacent to MS/HS Campus
City Holds Public Area Plan Meeting

City of Falls Church sealThis Saturday, the City's Department of Community Planning and Economic Development Services is kicking off the small area planning effort for the west end of the city. The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Falls Church Episcopal off E. Fairfax Street. Over the last several years, the City has adopted small area plans for different commercial areas. This plan will build on what is already under consideration for the 10 acre site adjacent to the MEHMS/GMHS campus. The plan will provide guidance for redevelopment of the areas including FRIT (Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owner of the shopping center properties including Giant and Staples) and the Gordon Road Triangle.
