WCK News: October, 2019

The Montinore Estate tasting room rocked with enthusiasm as supporters of Washington County Kids gathered for the third annual social/fundraiser on October 10th. Tom Hughes, former Metro Chair and former Hillsboro Mayor gave a stirring talk about the need to support kids in Washington County during non-school time. Peter Vik’s guitar and vocals played while the group happily munched on delicious hors d’ouvres prepared by Claey’s Catering. Of course, the Montinore wines were superb! Silent auction items curated by Claire Morgan tempted a wide variety of interests from gift certificates to many local eateries, date nights, a twin-size quilt, to lunches with Senator Chuck Riley and Representative Sheri Schouten and County Commissioner Dick Schouten. A Mexican dinner for four was donated by Forest Grove School Board member Narce Rodriguez. A highlight of the evening was the screening of WCK’s new video, funded by Meyer Memorial Trust and available for viewing at washingtoncountykids.org.

We are grateful to all of our Reach for the Stars sponsors:

  • Christine Vernier
  • Joe and Corinne Christy
  • Werner James
  • Representative Margaret Doherty
  • Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse
  • Representative Mitch Greenlick and Harriet Greenlick
  • Math Gamers

WCK Videos Are Here!

Thanks to WCK’s grant from Meyer Memorial Trust, we now have a 5 minute video of our work plus several one minute and 15 second videos that can be used for short public service announcements (PSA’s).  We partnered with Oregon ASK to develop the videos and they were produced by Metro East. Some of WCK’s partners and kids appear in the videos – Adelante Mujeres, the Hillsboro Inukai Family Boys and Girls Club, and Centro Cultural de Washington County.  Leticia Aguilar, Roberto Bermejo, and Lindsay Garcia from those organizations are featured speakers as is Tom Hughes, former Metro Chair and former Hillsboro Mayor. And Susan Bender Phelps, President of Friends of Washington County Kids, as well as Katie Riley, President of Washington County Kids also appear. Check out the full video on the Washington County Kids homepage: washingtoncountykids.org

In The Media

WCK Changes from .com to .org

You may have noticed (or maybe not) but WCK has changed its website designation from .com to .org to be consistent with our nonprofit status. If you still use the old .com link, it doesn’t matter. Thanks to volunteer Shari Getz, you will be automatically redirected to the .org. We’re very grateful to our volunteer webmaster, Jin Wei Niu, for managing the website and helping with all things WordPress.

And Google ads!

We submitted a grant request to Google for up to $10,000 in free ads. Shari and I have been working together to meet their requirements and finally got the approval! You can help draft ads. Send your ideas to Shari at shari@creativity-hq.com  And, watch for (and click on!) our ads on Google!

And Newsletter Editor Transitions

Our longtime eNewsletter editor, Lisa Allen, is transitioning out of that role and Shari Getz has agreed to be our new editor. Lisa has managed to put out every issue of the newsletter and announcement since 2013 while juggling being a full-time mom of two, chairing the Hillsboro School Board, and a Washington County Kids board member. She is now pursuing full-time employment while remaining on the HSD School Board and WCK’s board. She has done an excellent job and we wish her well in her new employment. Shari is founder and owner of Creativity HQ, which offers after school creativity programming. We are happy to have her creative assistance!
