For the second straight year, the Port of San Diego’s Marketing & Communications Department has received top honors from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) in its annual Communications Awards Program. The Port accepted the Overall Award of Communications Excellence at the AAPA’s annual conference in Norfolk, Virginia on October 16, 2019, for its #ThatsMyBay pollution prevention video campaign. The series of videos features “tips” on how to keep the bay clean, each one focusing on a very specific behavior change based on local research and best practice information to help keep waste out of San Diego Bay.
“Our Marketing & Communications Department has done it again. In partnership with our Environmental Protection Department, they have taken technical topics and created funny, easy-to-understand videos that inspire San Diegans and visitors to join our efforts in keeping our waterways and bay clean,” said Randa Coniglio, Chief Executive Officer, Port of San Diego. “We are very proud of this campaign and honored that it’s being recognized by our peers at the AAPA.”
“Thanks to our efforts and those of our many partners, San Diego Bay is the cleanest it’s been since the Port was established in 1962. But, we can all do more to make it even cleaner and to keep it that way,” said Chairman Garry Bonelli, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “The #ThatsMyBay pollution prevention video campaign is about keeping waste out of our bay, so marine and plant life can thrive, and we all can continue to enjoy our region’s most precious natural resource.”
“With this campaign, we wanted to circumvent the negative PSA cycle and create a new type of environmental marketing campaign that would disarm viewers with wit and charm,” said Jenifer Barsell, Director of Marketing & Communications, Port of San Diego. “Our goal is that the entire San Diego region will join us in saying #ThatsMyBay.”
AAPA is the unified and recognized voice of seaports in the Americas, representing ports in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America.
In addition to the Overall Award of Communications Excellence, the Port also earned the following awards:
