Trump's lawyers say he is immune to any charges while in office
  • During a federal hearing with 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, President Trump’s lawyers referenced the precedent that presidents cannot be indicted while in office and claimed that this expanded to include grand jury subpoenas for documents
  • William Consovoy, one of the president’s attorneys, said that the president's immunity to criminal investigation would apply, even if Trump “shot someone on 5th Ave. in New York City” 
  • The subpoena requests Trump’s financial and business records– even his personal tax records

Chilean president responds on 5th day of violent protests

  • Chilean president, Sebastián Piñera, announced a set of conciliatory measures aimed at serving as a solution to what has been considered the country’s worst political crisis in 30 years
  • On Tuesday night, riots and arsonal activity sparked the beginning of the 5-day protest against low wages, rising prices, insufficient pensions, a lack of access to health services, and significant income inequality
  • In his speech, Piñera promised increased pensions, new insurance programs, increased minimum monthly income rates, 40% tax bracket for people earning over $11,000 a month, and cancelled a 9.2 percent increase in electricity costs

Amazon continues to do business with dangerous factories

  • A Wall Street Journal investigation found that Amazon has continued to sell garments manufactured and supplied by Bangladeshi factories that other U.S. major retailers have banned due to unsafe working conditions
  • These apparel retailers joined safety monitoring groups and cut ties with factories that violated safety requirements

TECH 📱

Eureka! Google claims a quantum breakthrough

  • Google announced that it had achieved "quantum supremacy," which allows computers to perform calculations at incomparable speeds
  • Google’s machine completed a complex calculation in 3 minutes and 20 seconds while it would take over 10,000 years for today’s  supercomputers to complete
  • Though the quantum machine is not finalized, researchers believe it can achieve advancements in artificial intelligence and encryption

US 🦅

California prepares for second round of power outages

  • In preparation for the notorious wildfire season, PG&E and other electrical companies announced that they would be starting another series of preventative power shut-offs on Wednesday
  • The outages will last 48 hours and impact as many as 180,000 homes and businesses throughout the state
  • The utilities expressed concern that the forecasted high winds may knock down power lines or throw branches and debris into them, which are the primary causes of wildfires

Controversy swirls around the stairs in Joker

  • ‘Joker’ fans and Instagrammers have flocked to take pictures on the steps on which Joaquin Phoenix danced in the newest ‘Joker’ film shot in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, New York
  • Residents are upset about the exploitation of their neighborhood "for likes"
  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remembers growing up in the Bronx and being told to stay away from the steps and said, “Keep your Instagram posts outside of the Boogie Down” in an interview with TMZ
