RASN is back this month with more exciting breaking news from the regional arts scene in Queensland. As we head towards the end of a huge first year with the establishment of the network, we start to look back on many of the exceptional programs launched in 2019 as well as the many successful funding application wins for programs rolling out in 2020.

YOUTH ON FIRE
For the highly anticipated return of Queensland’s premier regional arts conference ARTS ABLAZE, Goat Track Theatre collaborated with the Scenic Rim Regional Council to facilitate the youth artists mentorship programme YOUTH ON FIRE.
Staying on-site for the course of 6 days, the YOUTH ON FIRE delegates were provided with the space to network, attend conference events and publicly exhibit their work. It was a highly successful and action-packed week. This documentary was created to showcase the amazing things these young artists encountered in the programme.
This project would not be possible without the generous support of Festivals Australia and the Scenic Rim Regional Council.

Mulgewanke 🇦🇺
A curious water spirit that is half fish, half man, with a matted crop of reeds instead of hair. They make a booming sound frequency in their lake which is said to cause rheumatism to any who hear it.
For this Inktober I intend to draw a series of mythological creatures that aren’t too famous or well known. I love mythology and so I thought it would be fun to learn about some new/old myths and legends. If you have any that you would like to see me draw, feel free to leave a comment!

BUILDING a music career takes a team, indeed an entire industry to kick-start that journey.
BEMAC is seeking submissions from a Logan-based artist or band to record an original song which will be professionally mixed and mastered, ready for release. The finished work will then undergo a professional publicity campaign to assist the song’s promotional efforts.
Delivered under BEMAC’s EMERGE Series, an artist development program established in 2017 to empower emerging musicians to cultivate their performance, songwriting, recording and business and marketing skills, RECORD & RELEASE will support the development of a thriving career for one Logan artist or band.
For musicians, EMERGE provides opportunities to develop and upskill through various opportunities and programs like RECORD and its partner program RELEASE, which focus on the full scope of what it takes to flourish as a musician in the modern world.
From DIY home-recording techniques to building your online presence, BEMAC’s EMERGE Series creates inroads for emerging musicians to take their music to a broader audience.

If submitting a band 75% of total members must be Logan City residents.
Must a have a song ready to undergo recording at the time of EOI submission.
Must be available to record on weekdays.

BEMAC is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) from local individuals, groups, businesses and not-for-profits based in Ipswich and Logan to develop local projects that:
* Build capacity for artists, creatives and arts workers
* Develop individual skills and opportunities
* Respond to local needs
* Build local leadership and partnerships in arts and culture
* Support economic development
* Engage and enliven local venues
* Value heritage, history and culture (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures)
Successful EOIs may be supported financially up to $2,500 and/or through the provision of mentorship, marketing, project development, partnership development and more.
EOIs will be assessed by BEMAC and City Council cultural staff.

Lizard Tail
RASN NQ is excited to announce that their application to the Category C – FNQ and NQ Monsoon Trough Funding was successful! Which means that the major cross-regional initiative, Lizard Tail, will be commencing; connecting communities from Hughenden to Palm Island through an iconic art project.
RASN NQ will be working with North Queensland communities affected by flooding earlier in the year to deliver a recovery project developed by visual and performing artist Hiromi Tango. Lizard Tail will invite members of the community to engage with Hiromi and local artist/facilitators for a process of sharing stories, creative expression including writing, textile sculpturing, temporal public installation, and performance.
As part of this project, local artists and arts workers at each of the four locations (Hughenden, Pentland, Townsville & Palm Island) will be mentored by Hiromi, with a vision to lead future community engagement projects of similar style and scope.

In 2020, the Regional Arts Services Network North Queensland (RASN NQ) is embarking on a major cross-regional recovery project entitled Lizard Tail, that will engage communities from Hughenden to Palm Island in the creation of a performative sculpture project with artist Hiromi Tango. Renowned for her community-engaged collaborative projects, Hiromi will mentor local artists at each location to lead community engagement workshops where participants will become co-creators of a large-scale textile sculpture.

Over 2000 locals attended the launch of the second year of Lanescape Festival in Goondiwindi where two new murals were revealed as part of a five year plan for the town.

Exciting New Funding for SWQ!
South West Queensland Regional Arts Services Network has been successful in receiving funding from the National Library of Australia Community Heritage Grant. The funding will be used to run a series of 12 Digitisation workshops across the South West. The workshops will be held in March/April 2020.
SWQ RASN has also been successful in receiving funding from Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Indigenous Languages Grant. The funding will be used to capture language that forms part of the South West Queensland Indigenous Cultural Trail.

Have you heard about Red Ridge Interior Queensland’s newest project, Trailblazing the West? Trailblazing the West is a Red Ridge hosted art trail that will deliver numerous Water Tower and Tank mural artworks in different towns throughout our stunning Outback, including: Mt Isa, Dajarra, Richmond, Windorah, Jundah, Stonehenge, and Augathella – linking in with Charleville and Cunnamulla, thanks to Year of the Outback – Premier Outback Events funding.
The exciting launch of this regional project is set to kick off in September with its first stop being Mt Isa, rolling through the towns to wrap-up in 2020 and spanning a distance of over 1800 kilometres. By engaging professional large-scale street artists to complete the art trail that’ll lead through the heart of Western Queensland, we hope to celebrate our Outback and landscape in a way that incorporates each town’s individual culture. Although we all belong to one region, the vastness of our space has meant that all are stories are so unique - so what better way to celebrate what makes our towns stand out than to showcase our heritage through art?

Hope Vale Winning Artworks | QRAA 2019
Congratulations to Hope Vale artists, Madge Bowen, Grace Rosendale and Wanda Gibsons for being chosen to tour as a part of the Flying Arts Queensland Regional Arts Awards touring exhibition 'State of Diversity' 2020 - 2021.
Madge Bowen also won the 'Remote Artists Award' for her screen-print 'Maramaka'. The Remote Artist Award is sponsored by USQ Artsworx, with the prize being a fully funded one-week residency at McGregor Summer School in January 2020.
The artists have been designing textile prints for several years and it is great to see all their hard work recognised in a state-wide arts award.

Write Sparks offers beginners and intermediate writers the opportunity to tell their stories while learning the skills of writing for performance. Participants will experience and learn how to progress their work from strength to strength through the structured support of award-winning playwright and dramaturge, Kathryn Ash.
The program is run over three residencies delivered throughout a 6-month period running from Friday afternoons through to Sunday afternoons (15 hours of intensive hands on development per residency), and also features a number of personal dramaturgical sessions with Kathryn to help craft your ideas.
These residencies will not only be an amazing opportunity to work your craft through activities and writing exercises but will also build a great network of peers. A limited number of participants will be able to attend the annual JUTE Playwrights’ Retreat, a weekend of fun, writing and play-reading. Participants will be aiming to develop a full first draft of a script for performance by the end of the year.
