Boronia West PS

Notice:
Member Val Rees believes her email list has been hacked, if you get odd emails, especially from people you don’t know, take extra care.

This weekend is the KPS outing to the Eldon / Alexandra area.
Hopefully we will have a report in the next edition.

The Syllabus Comittee is meeting next week to further develop our 2020 syllabus so stay tuned for a few announcements about what will be happening next year.

Coming up soon will be the Image of the year (Paul Burke Award) and the top KPS Image makers of 2019.

Tuesday walks:
We are gradually working our way through the 50 Bushland parks for the Knox Council Biodiversity project.
We have covered 14, so around 28% done, we are planning to be completed by end of March 2020.
The latest was the Egan Lee Reserve. Really beautiful day to get out and stretch the legs and take some pickies, a good turn out of members followed by coffee at Banksia Nursery.
Next Tuesday (29th Oct) we are doing an unscheduled trip to MGA to take in a little culture. Meet at 10am in the Foyer. Of course coffee will follow.
The next real walk is on Tues 12th November to Tirhatuan Wetlands (Not Lakewood). There is no walk event on Tuesday 5th being Cup Day.

Knox Biodiversity Project

Richard Kelly is our Biodiversity Project Guru and as such, he is the go to bloke for information as well as the recipient of the images that he will pass on to Knox Council. Having said that, he is busy for a while so please don't send him any images until further notice. Lots of information is just below.

From Richard:
The images are to go into a brochure (called a passport) which will be prepared by council for distribution to residents. The brochure is to encourage residents to explore and become familiar with the pockets of remnant bushland which still exists within Knox.

It is envisaged that residents will “Tick Off” the sites as they visit them.

So, our images should be designed to make the area look so attractive as to encourage a visit by the residents and their families.

Landscapes, including (or not) any built infrastructure, perhaps with a person enjoying the amenity, would all be candidates for inclusion in the brochure. Images of the flora and fauna on site would also be a big hit with Council.

So if you capture an image that is interesting to you then probably it will be interesting to others too.

Personally I think an iconic image is a curving path disappearing into the bush and I am sure at least one pic like that will make in to the brochure, but probably not for every site.

Images should be in JPEG format in the highest resolution possible (ie DON'T resize them and please shoot at the best possible quality your camera can produce).

We should provide maybe 10 images from each site – anywhere between 5 and 20 I should think. I’m not in a position to make a selection so whatever you send to me I will pass on the Council.

There is a Google Document online that has a list of the sites we need to phorograph as well as a list of sites already photographed. Anyone with the link can edit this document so if you photograph a piece of bushland, please add this place to the list of photographed places.  You don't need to save anything, Google does it for you.

Open the page, add your bit, exit the page. Seriously easy.

Current Status.
I have images for some of the sites which I am storing on a portable HDD in preparation for passing on to Nadine at the Council.

Nadine has had a look at the initial pics from the first 2 Tuesday Walks. She is happy so far, except we need to have another look at the bushland part of Mansons Reserve rather than just the Sports Oval section which we concentrated on during our Walk.

Her further comment was that some of our pics, while they may not be particularly relevant to the biodiversity project, may indeed be useful for other areas within council eg, a photograph of a cyclist riding on one of the bike paths might suit Parks and Leisure. As long as we don’t have a problem, she would pass them on to the relevant section in Council.

If anyone has a Canon 24-70mm lens they are considering selling, can you please let me know as I can put you in touch with a prospective buyer.

Lord Howe Island. 2020 Expressions of interest.

Bruce Fullard is proposing a 7 day excursion to Lord Howe island 1 to 8 September. A quotation has been received from Flight Centre for just under $2,000 pp which includes accommodation at Somerset Apartments, flights from Melbourne to Sydney and Sydney to Lord Howe Island and return.

Quotation is dependant on numbers.

Expresions of interest can be forwarded to Bruce Fullard 0418316504 or talk to Bruce

Lord Howe Island wears its status as a UNESCO World Heritage paradise with pride and locals go out of their way to protect it. Only 400 visitors are allowed on the treasured island at any one time to experience its unique natural attractions, which range from snorkelling to playing golf on a picturesque nine-hole course.

The pristine waters are home to more than 500 species of fish and 90 species of coral. A wonderful way to see the reef, colourful fish and turtles is on a glass-bottom boat and snorkelling tour. You can also hand-feed fish at Ned’s Beach, in a sanctuary zone where recreational fishing is not allowed.

Along the west coast is a sandy semi-enclosed sheltered coral reef lagoon. Most of the population lives in the north, while the south is dominated by forested hills rising to the highest point on the island, Mount Gower (875 m, 2,871 ft).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Howe_Island - cite_note-Group-6 The Lord Howe Island Group [ comprises 28 islands, islets, and rocks. Apart from Lord Howe Island itself, the most notable of these is the volcanic and uninhabited Ball's Pyramid about 23 km (14 mi; 12 nmi) to the southeast of Howe. To the North lies a cluster of seven small uninhabited islands called the Admiralty Group.[7]

UNESCO records the Lord Howe Island Group as a World Heritage Site of global natural significance.[15] Most of the island is virtually untouched forest, with many of the plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Other natural attractions include the diversity of the landscapes, the variety of upper mantle and oceanic basalts, the world's southernmost barrier coral reef, nesting seabirds, and the rich historical and cultural heritage.[16] The Lord Howe Island Act 1981 established a "Permanent Park Preserve" (covering about 70% of the island).[14] The island was added to the Australian National Heritage List on 21 May 2007[17] and the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.[18] The surrounding waters are a protected region designated the Lord Howe Island Marine Park.

The proposed accommodation is Somerset apartments and is perfectly situated between Neds Beach and the Lagoon, on a level area of the Island, allowing easy walking and biking to nearby shops, restaurants and the Visitor Centre. The units are nestled in subtropical palm groves alive with splashes of colour from Hawaiian hibiscus and fragrant frangipani flowers. Somerset is the ideal location for visitors wanting to explore and discover the natural Lord Howe Island (/haʊ/; formerly Lord Howe's Island) is an irregularly crescent-shaped volcanic remnant in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, 600 km (320 nmi) directly east of mainland Port Macquarie, 780 km (420 nmi) northeast of Sydney, and about 900 km (490 nmi) southwest of Norfolk Island. It is about 10 km (6.2 mi) long and between 0.3 and 2.0 km (0.19 and 1.24 mi) wide with an area of 14.55 km2 (3,600 acres), though just 3.98 km2 (980 acres) of that comprise the low-lying developed part of the island.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Howe_Island - cite_note-State_of_NSW-5

KPS Committee Member Paul Lucas is our new Mentor Registrar .
This means that Paul is the bloke to see if you need help with anything photographic.
Paul is compiling a database of members who are willing and able to help other members with their photography related problems.
He will then be able to put members seeking help in touch with members offering help.
Using WeTransfer for sending images to our image steward is really the best way to submit pictures.
Try it next time. It's quick and seriously easy, free and you get a response to know when your images have been downloaded.

There are easy to follow instructions on our website here
If, when reading the newsletter or our website, you find some blue text, sometimes  with an underline, there is a very good chance that it is a clickable link that will either take you to an email addfress or a web page, whichever is relevant for that piece of text.
It will look something like this: Knox Camera Club or perhaps this: Webmaster

One is a web address and the other is an email address.
Click on them to see what happens.
If smoke starts to pour out of your computer or device after doing this, please turn it off immediately.
Your committee is planning some subtle changes to our image evaluations for 2020 so stay tuned for more information once we have firmed up these adjustments.
Also in the pipeline is a complete re-write of the image evaluation rules to make them easier to understand.
If you submit images to the imagesteward@knoxcameraclub email address you should receive an automated reply. You should also, within less than a week, get a personal response to say that your images have been received.
Please use WeTransfer rather than sending direct.
KPS has purchased two new monitor calibrators that are more sophisticated than our current models. They are available for members to borrow now.

Croydon Camera House – make sure you tell them you are a KPS member, it is a good idea to ask for Nigel.

It's also a good idea to find your best price online from an Australian retailer then see if Croydon Camera House will price match.
