INDIAN COOKING CLASS
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND
2:00 - 4:00pm

Have you ever wondered what makes Indian cuisine so aromatic and delicious? Are you
curious as to the basics of Indian food? Are you inspired by learning about different
cultures through food?

Join Japan House as we welcome back Illinois State University Associate Professor
Archana Shekara to showcase some of the most basic, yet truly authentic Indian foods
and spices.

Guests will learn how to make their own masala, an essential blend of ground spices
used extensively in Indian cuisine including black pepper, cumin, clove, cardamom and
cinnamon.

Next, guests will be able to sample some of the most popular Indian Street Food
incorporating this spice blend such as Masala Chai (tea with spices) and BhelPuri Chaat
(a savory snack of puffed rice, vegetables and a tangy tamarind sauce), as well as two
kinds of dessert; Shahi Falooda (ice cream with rose syrup, basil seeds and corn starch
vermicelli) and Aam Shrikhand (Greek yogurt with mango pulp, saffron, cardamom and
pistachios).

No experience is necessary. All supplies included. Space is limited to this very special event. Cost is $15 for Students and Tomonokai // $20 for General Public.

WAGASHI WORKSHOP

5:30pm - 7:30pm

Learn to make wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets served during tea ceremony, with author and Professor Emeritus, Kimiko Gunji.

Japan House released “The Art of Wagashi: Recipes for Japanese Sweets that Delight the Palate and the Eyes” earlier this year, and since then, customers from around the world have been ordering the cookbook to learn more about this unique art form.

Join us as we host a hands-on workshop to hone your wagashi making skills! Guests will be introduced to some of the basic techniques to start, then will practice more advanced wagashi making skills.

Seasonal cold-weather favorite of rikyu manjyu (steamed wagashi), soba manjyu (steamed wagashi with buckwheat and Japanese yam), kurumigashi (candied walnuts), and dorayaki (red bean pancake) will be made.

Guests will be served tea along with the sweets to enjoy at the end of class, or can take them home to enjoy with a loved one. Cookbooks will be available for purchase ($38 plus tax), or bring in your already-purchased wagashi cookbooks to be signed by the author.

No experience required. Space is limited to 10 guests.

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS

SEVEN COURSE SAKE TASTING
with Chef Enomoto

We were so honored to have Chef Suzuko Enomoto back at Japan House and be able to experience her delicious cooking again! The presentation and flavors of each dish were exceptional. The food and the people really made it a wonderful night. Thank to everyone that joined us and we love being able to host events that bring people together!
FALL OPEN HOUSE

We had successful Fall Open House! The weather was perfect, tea ceremonies were a delight, and our featured guests were fantastic. We want to thank our friends, Cheri and Teri, from Tangerine Mountain Imports and Designs for doing such a wonderful job. They gave a lovely presentation about their journey of becoming one of the largest importers of Japanese kimono and how they use this as an avenue to share Japanese culture. They also threw a beautiful fashion show with our amazing Japan House interns to showcase some of the kimonos in their collection. Here are some of the photos from that weekend.
