Nursery Newsletter October 2019

This weekend is the last nursery open weekend of the year!

Do come and visit if you can - we will be open 9.30am - 5.00pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Autumn colour is starting on our National Plant Collection® of Molinia (Purple Moor Grass); wonderful grasses for lighting up the garden late in the year.

We also have a good collection of hardy Chrysanthemums which are just starting into flower.  They should provide plenty of colour over the coming weeks.

If you can't make a visit, don't forget we continue to send plants out by mail order throughout the year...

With all best wishes,
Tim Fuller

Hardy Chrysanthemums

Hardy Garden Chrysanthemums are hard to beat for late colour in the garden.  A recent article in Gardens Illustrated magazine helped to highlight how valuable they are.

For those bitten by the bug we recommend the Hardy Plant Society booklet on Garden Chrysanthemums by National Collection holder Judy Barker.

We are particularly fond of the 'pom-pom' forms, which seem especially hardy and disease/weather-resistant:

'Purleigh White':  Perfect rosettes that start pink in bud and age to white.  Ideal for an autumn wedding - all florists should grow this!

'Peterkin':  Gorgeous bronzy tones that perfectly fit in with the autumnal garden.

'Nantyderry Sunshine':  A bright sunny plant to light up the garden, try planted with blue asters.

Molinia caerulea ssp. arundinacea 'Windspiel'

Purple Moor Grass

Our National Collection of Molinia is at it's best in the autumn, with flower stems and leaves changing to yellows and golds that glow in the low autumn sun.

Molinia is widely used by garden designers for the low tussocks of ribbon-like leaves and the tall 'see-through' screen of airy flower heads that are held above.  It can also make an extremely effective pot specimen - a 'firework' explosion of flower stems arching out of the pot.

We have a wide selection of varieties in a range of heights:

'Bergfreund' -  Probably Tim's favourite taller variety, upright and manageable at 1.5m.

'Les Ponts de Ce' - Red tinted flower stems, very arching, to 1.8m.

'Variegata' - A shorter variety at only 45-60cm, and good variegated leaves.

Looking Good Now:
Symphyotrichum novae-angliae 'Bishop Colneso'
Symphyotrichum
'Bishop Colenso'

A traditional tall 'New England' aster to 1.2m.  Glowing deep purple flowers, lovely in combination with paler varieties such as 'Little Carlow'.  Also good in contrast with rich yellows such as Solidago 'Fireworks'. Loved by bees.

Symphyotrichum 'Bishop Colenso'

Salvia uliginosa
Salvia uliginosa

Tall wands of electric blue flowers on wiry stems to 1.8m.  A striking colour that looks good at this time of the year with yellow Helianthus or Bidens.

Salvia uliginosa
Aster ageratoides 'Asran'
Aster ageratoides
'Asran'

A tough vigorous plant that forms spreading patches covered in pale lavender flowers from August to November.

Aster ageratoides 'Asran'

Symphyotrichum lateriflorum var. horizontale
Symphyotrichum
lateriflorum
var. horizontale

Masses of tiny flowers on dense bushy plants to 90cm. Purple tinted foliage, and can be used as an herbaceous hedge!
