RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN POST-COMMUNIST EUROPE

Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein will be giving this year's International Association for Religious Freedom annual lecture. 

Rabbi Andrew started visiting Czechoslovakia in the 1980s in search of the history of various Jewish communities. He met and gained the trust of the tiny Jewish survivor community, and has frequently returned over the last 20-something years.

FREE MODERN SLAVERY & HOMELESSNESS WORKSHOP

 

6 & 13 November

 
René Cassin is hosting training sessions on modern slavery and homelessness, primarily aimed at members of the Jewish community who volunteer for soup kitchens, homeless shelters or asylum drop-in centres. Led by external trainers, these sessions will give frontline volunteers knowledge & awareness of the dangers of modern slavery, as well as the tools to spot the signs and know how to respond.

Due to the employment of Lauren Keiles as the Community Engagement Officer for the Board of Deputies, we now have a vacancy for a Deputy to represent Liberal Judaism until 2021.

If you wish to stand to be a Liberal Judaism representative, you will need to send a written nomination, proposed and seconded by Liberal Judaism members to Shelley Shocolinsky-Dwyer (shelley@liberaljudaism.org) by midday on Monday 18th November. Proxy voting forms will be amended and sent on Tuesday 19th November. 

Stuart MacDonald remains in post as a Liberal Judaism deputy and the Treasurer of the Board of Deputies.

Christian communities in the Middle East Panel

The Council of Christians and Jews will be hosting a panel to dicuss the situation on the ground in the Middle East, and what Chrisitians and Jews can do to help.

The panel features: Tim Livesey (Embrace the Middle East Director) and Henrietta Blythe (Open Doors Director). The panel will be chaired by Rabbi David Mason (CCJ Trustee).

The panel discussion will be followed by an address from His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos, Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London in conversation with Bishop Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, chaired by Bishop Michael Ipgrave, CCJ Chair.

Marking Sheila Shulman's fifth yahrzeit

Leo Baeck College invite you to join them for an evening in honour of Sheila Shulman's fifth yahrzeit. Inspired by the books that Sheila left behind, replete with bookmarks and annotations full of her personality and intellect, it will celebrate her astonishing legacy with contributions from friends, colleagues and students, including Rabbi Dr Judith Rosen-Berry. Please join to remember Sheila as a voracious, passionate, sometimes apoplectic, always incisive reader through talks, study and song.

Memorial Service for Willie Kessler

A Memorial Service for former Liberal Jewish Synagogue (LJS) president Willie Kessler will take place at the LJS. Willie was a much loved and highly respected former council member, vice chair and president of the LJS, as well as being a chair of Leo Baeck College and a vice president of Liberal Judaism. A tribute will appear in the next issue of LJ Today.

A wonderful opportunity has arisen to join this vibrant and caring Synagogue working in the office at the heart of our community.

Each week we share some insight into what our staff and rabbis have been doing over the last seven days
 
Rabbi Danny Rich
  • Gave an exposition of Psalm 37 at the Epsom (Surrey) Islamic Centre.
  • Entertained Anat Hoffman, the director of the Israel Religious Action Centre, and her family to tea in his sukkah.
  • Preached the sermon on 'Religious Rites to Human Rights' in the presence of the Sheriff of Norwich at the Norwich Liberal Jewish Congregation. He spoke of how the sukkah had led to his founding the campaign for the admittance of Syrian refugees to this country.
Senior Management Team
  • The Operations Director met with our Treasurer, as part of her regular meetings with our trustees.
  • The Director of Strategy & Partnerships had several meetings developing our resources and relationships with Israeli organisations including the World Zionist Organisation.
Strategy, Events & Communications
  • Members of the strategy team met with two communities to support them with the development of their internal strategy and development plans.
  • The events team have been working on our upcoming events including the Hot Potatoes panel event in December, the Annual Dinner in February, and our Biennial Weekend in May.
LJY-Netzer
  • The Movement Workers met with Hannah Stephenson, the Officer with responsibility for youth.
  • Over the weekend the Movement Workers visited our communities in York & Norwich.
