Meet the 2020 Beacon of Hope

Jacqueline Wilson grew up in Cecil County and survived a toxic relationship, drug dependency, and run-ins with law enforcement before moving to Harford County.  Now a mother to a five-year old daughter, engaged to be married, and working at a facility that helps those battling addiction; she truly feels she has been given a second chance at life.

WIN Family Services nominated Jacqui as a Family of Hope, and they are helping her and her fiance learn how to be the best parents they can. The SUCCESS Project is assisting them with finding affordable, local rental housing. Jacqui received her award at the Taste of SUCCESS banquet on  November 1.  Look for pics from the event on theupwardclimb.org.

No Tricks, All Treats
at Annual Halloween Party

WOW what a HUGE hit our annual Trunk or Treat was!  We had the biggest crowd yet, and some of the  most elaborately decorated trunks ever seen--Jurassic Park, Care Bears, Under the Sea, Red Carpet and so many more!  New this year was the addition of hayrides which the participants loved, and as always, the generosity of the community in donating costumes and candy was unsurpassed.

Many thanks to all who came on October 26, with special thanks to the  businesses and organizations that took part: Aberdeen Chevrolet, A Better Lawn Services, HDG Police Department, Maryland Department of Transportation, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority - Omicron Chi Zeta Chapter, Steps Recovery, Catholic Charities Early Head Start..  Check out the rest of the fun photos from this great community gathering on our website

Another Month of Giving Thanks

And just like that, here we are
in November!
This is the month that we all give thanks for what we have and who we have.  So there's no better time to express our gratitude for all those who helped make our fall events so amazing!  We had our biggest turnout to date of guests, donations, and decorated cars for our annual Trunk or Treat Halloween party October 26; and less than a week later we hosted a celebration of inspiration at the Taste of SUCCESS on November 1, with a new venue, menu and fun format.  What a whirlwind!  Read more on these awesome events below, and check out additional pics from the events on our website.

But there's no rest for HDGHA because we have families to help every day, so onto the next adventure!  Our collection this month is focused on stocking the SUCCESS Pantry with paper products, cleaning supplies and health and hygiene items. The SUCCESS Pantry is one of the only places in  the county where families in need have access to these things, so we we want to be able to provide them.  Bring your contributions to our office at 101 Stansbury Court Monday-Thursday, 9am-3pm.

And as the holidays quickly approach, the season of charitable giving begins, too.  We are once again participating in #GivingTuesday on Facebook, so any donations we receive via that platform will be  matched by Facebook.  Wow!  Learn more about the program in the article that follows.

Thanks to everyone for your continuing generosity supporting our mission!  We wish each and every one of you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

A Celebration of Inspiration at the Taste of SUCCESS

The Taste of SUCCESS sip and sample fundraiser was a BIG hit!  Guests thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to sample food and drinks from a variety of local vendors, and the freedom to network and explore the beautiful Liriodendron Mansion.  As always, the Casino Room was a popular stop on the tour, the prizes were AMAZING, and the DJ kept everyone stepping out on the dance floor.

Our nominated Families of Hope were made to feel special and honored, which is exactly what the event is all about.  These determined individuals faced tremendous adversity, yet they continue to keep a positive attitude and inspire those around them.  Such an uplifting experience!  The best part is the "pay it forward"  aspect of the gathering, since all proceeds will be funneled back into The SUCCESS Project to develop new or enhanced programs that assist even more families.
