Classifying Candy with Scientific Rigor
Fifth-grade science students are using leftover Halloween candy to explore how a dichotomous key, or two branching classifications, work. The students are classifying candy by answering yes/no questions about each piece. Scientists construct a dichotomous key using different characteristics to divide the organisms into smaller and smaller groups.

Performing in Reader's Theater
Reading fluency is coming along fast for these first graders above. Students are improving their skills with a "reader's theater" where they work to combine fluency with an expression as each child reads their part of a story or play. The concept of Reader's Theater continues at TJ as many grades use it to build on skills, including the fourth-grade class below.

Observing Veterans Day in the Schools
|
|
At Mason, thanks go to Ms. Gurgo and Mr. Sheedy for creating a Veterans Day display left in the school's lobby, recognizing alumni and staff who have served.
Students at TJ have been working on writing to service members and will pass on their notes to the DAR today for distribution to those on active duty.

Volleyball Falls in Five Sets
Mason lost the opening set in the Region SF against Independence (Ashburn) on Thursday night at home. The Mustangs regrouped and came out strong in the second set, taking the match to 1-1. The Mustangs lost the third and won the fourth. The gym was loud with fans stomping the bleachers and cheering their teams on as the fifth and final set began. The GM girls lost, concluding a hard-fought, emotional roller coaster of a night. The great news is that with no seniors on the team, the majority of the crew are expected back next year, even stronger from this year's great run.

Senior Night
Stands Full on Chilly Night
The final regular-season game for GM's football team was played at home against Brentsville Friday night. The Mustangs were down by a TD at halftime as dozens of senior fall athletes, band, and chorus members took to the far 50-yard line to walk across the field with family or friends. Seniors were recognized and applauded for their years of activities and sports. Play resumed, and the Tigers scored two touchdowns to Mason's one in the second half, leaving the score Brentsville 34, Mason 21. Region play begins this Friday when GM's team heads to Brentsville for a rematch.
