Play it Food Safe campaign

Following evaluation the intention is to implement the campaign State-wide. View the campaign package for further details. A range of resources including videos, posters, and social media images are available to download on the campaign page. Support to promote the campaign using local communication channels is appreciated.

Timely reminder to replace asbestos roofing
Western Australian homeowners are being urged to replace – not repair – their old asbestos roofs. Asbestos Awareness Week (18-22 November) was a timely reminder that the asbestos cement sheeting commonly used in roofs, fences and cladding of older homes across Perth and regional WA towns is now at least 30 years old and nearing the end of its useful life. EOI - 2020 fruit and vegetable survey
The EHD is seeking interest from local governments to participate in the 2020 chemical monitoring survey which will involve collecting samples from local fruit and vegetable growers who sell fresh produce directly to the public at the farm gate or at farmers markets. The survey will commence in early 2020 and participation can occur throughout the year. To register your interest or find out further details email Foodsafety@health.wa.gov.au
Talking egg safety on RTR
As part of National Food Safety Week staff discussed all things eggs and general food safety principles on the RTR Fitter Happier podcast. The interview included questions on handling and cooking eggs safely, as well as what to do when handling eggs from backyard chickens. Interviews also took place on ABC radio and Curtin radio.
Raw egg-based products factsheet
Raw egg-based products such as, aioli, mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce and tiramisu have an increased risk of being unsafe if the product is not manufactured, stored and handled in a manner that prevents contamination and growth of Salmonella. Food businesses producing raw egg-based products should manage the risks in accordance with the Food Unit Notice on the safe handling of eggs and products containing eggs.
Primary production of fruit and vegetables
The Primary Production and Sale of Fruit and Vegetables Food Notice has been updated. The notice provides for a consistent approach to the application of the Food Act registration provisions to the sale of fruit and vegetables directly to the public by primary food production businesses.
Sale of raw milk not permitted
The marketing and/or sale of unpasteurised or raw milk for human consumption is not permitted under the Food Act 2008 as it is unsafe for human consumption. Labelling of this milk as Bath Milk or Pet Milk is strongly discouraged and is a tactic used by businesses to avoid complying with the food safety requirements. Businesses wanting to sell milk for human consumption need to comply with standard 4.2.4 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and must register with the EHD.
Medical Entomology Annual Report 18-19
The Medical Entomology 2018/19 Annual Report summarises all human cases of mosquito-borne disease notified to the Department of Health and recorded in the WA Notifiable Infectious Disease Database, as well as the varied and comprehensive activities undertaken by Medical Entomology. Quarterly reports on mosquito-borne disease human case notifications by Public Health region in WA have also recently been made available online.
Promoting tobacco laws to WA clubs
Clubs WA conduct a Trade Expo every year to promote services that are available to clubs within the state. As most WA clubs have a smoking area and a few tobacco sellers licence, the EHD promoted compliance with tobacco legislation and the new laws about smoking within 5m of a doorway. "No Smoking” signs and stickers were available for attendees.
National tobacco control
Staff attended the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference and the Australian Illicit Tobacco Taskforce Domestic Conference in Sydney. This included presentations by tobacco control experts, health promotion and policy strategists, and the latest research and viewpoints on smoking cessation and tobacco control. EHD has been invited to support a federal government regulatory taskforce that is seeking participation of State tobacco enforcement units in reducing illicit tobacco in Australia.
Illegal drug activity in homes
Police reports show growth in the numbers of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT labs) reported and a fall in the numbers of meth labs and cannabis grow houses in WA. Concerned residents can refer to the guidance for tenants, property owners, real estate industry for management and recommended clean-up.
