Play it Food Safe campaign
A new food safety campaign is being piloted within Busselton over summer, aimed at reducing food poisoning rates by educating people about safe food handling practices in the home and when shopping. Following evaluation the intention is to implement the campaign State-wide. View the campaign package for further details. A range of resources including videos, posters, and social media images are available to download on the campaign page. Support to promote the campaign using local communication channels is appreciated.

Local governments, school nurses, GP's and anyone wanting to display or distribute the new Play it Food Safe information can download two varieties of flyers and posters, that are now available to order online. You must create an account, search Environmental Health and submit your order.

Timely reminder to replace asbestos roofing
Western Australian homeowners are being urged to replace – not repair – their old asbestos roofs. Asbestos Awareness Week (18-22 November) was a timely reminder that the asbestos cement sheeting commonly used in roofs, fences and cladding of older homes across Perth and regional WA towns is now at least 30 years old and nearing the end of its useful life. EOI - 2020 fruit and vegetable survey
The EHD is seeking interest from local governments to participate in the 2020 chemical monitoring survey which will involve collecting samples from local fruit and vegetable growers who sell fresh produce directly to the public at the farm gate or at farmers markets. The survey will commence in early 2020 and participation can occur throughout the year. To register your interest or find out further details email Foodsafety@health.wa.gov.au.

Talking egg safety on RTR
As part of National Food Safety Week staff discussed all things eggs and general food safety principles on the RTR Fitter Happier podcast. The interview included questions on handling and cooking eggs safely, as well as what to do when handling eggs from backyard chickens. Interviews also took place on ABC radio and Curtin radio.

Promoting tobacco laws to WA clubs
Clubs WA conduct a Trade Expo every year to promote services that are available to clubs within the state. As most WA clubs have a smoking area and a few tobacco sellers licence, the EHD promoted compliance with tobacco legislation and the new laws about smoking within 5m of a doorway. "No Smoking” signs and stickers were available for attendees.

National tobacco control
Staff attended the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference and the Australian Illicit Tobacco Taskforce Domestic Conference in Sydney. This included presentations by tobacco control experts, health promotion and policy strategists, and the latest research and viewpoints on smoking cessation and tobacco control. EHD has been invited to support a federal government regulatory taskforce that is seeking participation of State tobacco enforcement units in reducing illicit tobacco in Australia.

Thank you for 2019
We would like to thank our many partners who continue to drive improvements in environmental health standards across WA. In particular, we wish to thank the local government environmental health workforce who continue to protect communities at a local district level. We appreciate your input into the vast regulation review projects released throughout the year, as well as 100% compliance of all WA local governments who submitted reports under the Food Act and Public Health Act during 2019.

End of year hours
The EHD will have limited staff working from the 25 December 2019 - 3 January 2020. An on-call duty officer will be available to support management of high risk environmental health events. Please note this newsletter will not be released during January, but will start again in February 2020. The PathWest Environmental Microbiology Unit will also be closed at certain times, view the PathWest Christmas hours reminder.

Housing health risks review
The Managing housing risks in WA discussion paper is open for public consultation. The paper examines three pieces of legislation: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911 Part V, Division 1 (Houses unfit for occupation); Health (Laundries and Bathrooms) Regulations 1971; and the Sewerage (Lighting, Ventilation and Construction) Regulations 1971, to determine how the associated public health risks must be managed in the future. Provide feedback through the online survey. Consultation closes 12 December 2019.
