Folio Groups Coordinator

Having held the post of Folio Groups Coordinator for over 10 years, Barry Aldous is seeking to step down and make way for any Society member wishing to take up this post to do so. Folio Groups are an important activity within the Society and have been since the Society formed in 1893.

Being a postal Folio Group member is a wonderful way to demonstrate your photographic skills to like minded members and receive constructive comments and advice; the camaraderie between Group members is also significant.

Currently, there are four active Folio Groups with a total of around 50 members, the details of which can be downloaded from the Society website. The Folios cater for those interested in all formats of stereoscopic photography; Slides, Prints, Digital etc. Each Group has it’s own Secretary who is responsible for the administration and circulation of the Folios in their Group.

Barry is an active Folio Group member himself and will assist whoever wishes to adopt the post of Folio Groups Coordinator. In reality, the administrative duties involved are minimal, being of an advisory nature, reporting on the Groups activities and membership status to the Society’s Committee as and when Committee meetings are held.

The post allows for a creative overview of the Groups and the potential for diversity. The efforts of the coordinator are reflected in the production of an annual Show of Group members work presented at the Society’s Annual Convention.

William Powell Frith’s Railway Station
Victorian narrative painting and the stereoscope
Denis Pellerin 3D Talk - 13th Nov 2019
6pm Royal Holloway University of London
Railway Station Painting

2019 marks the 200th birthday of William Powell Frith, artist of Royal Holloway Picture Gallery’s beloved Railway Station (1862).

Photo historian Denis Pellerin takes us on a journey back in time when photographers were inspired by Frith and other artists to re-stage popular artworks for the stereoscope.

Come and see how stereoscopy became a unique – and relatively inexpensive – way of getting art into the middle class parlour.

Admission free, no booking necessary.

Scotland in 3D - A Victorian Virtual Reality Tour
Scotland in 3D Event

FREE EVENT - Illustrated 3D talk: Scotland in 3D - A Victorian Virtual Reality Tour
The Barony Centre, West Kilbride. Friday 29 November 7pm - 8pm.

Most people are astonished to discover that 3D was the most popular format
of photograph in 1860! Author and collector Peter Blair will describe the
Scottish invention of stereoscopy. Using antique 3D images from his book, he
will take you on a virtual reality tour of Scotland via the main Victorian tourist
hot spots and even West Kilbride! We will follow in the royal footsteps of
Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Victoria, and meet local heroes from Robert
the Bruce to Andy Murray.

Prepare to be astounded by Victorian ingenuity and the timeless beauty of
Scotland.

Peter also has a talk in Edinburgh at the National Library of Scotland, on 26th November 2019.
Although online it shows up as sold out, if you are local it may well be worth going along there are always no shows, so if anyone wants to just turn up they are likely to get in – just say you are with Peter.

London 11th January 2020
Themed meeting: "Engineering"

The London Meeting on January 11th will be a full festival of 3D AV shows produced by members and organised once again by Mike Hillyard.

As usual, the topic has been chosen in the hope that it will not prove restrictive, rather that it will stimulate creativity in its interpretation. The theme for 2020 is "Engineering". Please feel free to interpret this as broadly or obscurely as you wish.

As in earlier years, the show length can be anything from very short up to around 15 minutes.

.WMV, .AVI, .MP4 files are all fine, but please avoid executable files.

Your AV shows are always hugely appreciated by both the London and Coventry audiences and they will now probably also be seen in Redcar and Bury. Some shows are also likely to be used in the Convention programme as time permits. I am very much aware of the amount of time and effort that goes into the making of these shows and am greatly impressed by the level of complexity and professionalism that some are now achieving.

Please let me know if you think you have or will have a show for the programme. Please send shows in by 20th December at the latest, a lot earlier if possible - if material is available earlier, please do send it!

Looking forward to hearing from you!
All the best,
Mike Hillyard
