One year ago today, our community was deeply affected by the Borderline tragedy. Everyone seems to know or be related to someone who was injured or taken from us that evening. Our Respite community was impacted with the senseless loss of Justin Meek, an incredible young man who filled many helper roles including Respite Caregiver. His sister Victoria Rose was also working at Borderline that evening. In honor of Justin, she has continued to provide Respite to one of his families, as all who knew him continue to grieve.

Yesterday, a section of the 101 freeway was dedicated in memory of Sgt. Ron Helus. There are memorial events planned today with the unveiling of the Healing Garden at Conejo Creek North Park open to the public at 2:30pm, and then a storytelling event tomorrow evening at 7pm at the Civic Arts Plaza. For more info click here.

On this heart-breaking anniversary, please join us in remembering Justin and do one thing today to help another person smile. Please keep his sister, parents, family and friends, and everyone who continues to be affected by the tragedy, in your thoughts and prayers.

Remembering Her Brother

Justin's sister Victoria Rose told us yesterday:
"We did everything together. He was the reason I moved to this area and was also the reason I went to CLU. I was originally living in San Diego. When I moved here, he got me involved in both his friend groups and work groups. I then found out about respite at a job fair at CLU and got him involved. I thought he would be a great fit and a great role model. He did great at it, just looking at the extent of the role he played in Tyler's life. As its only been a year, I am still going through the grieving process.

My advice to others is to keep holding on. Let people love you and help you heal - let them be your rock. They can be strong when you are weak. Live like Justin - be true, genuine, compassionate and show love and empathy. Be kind to everyone because that is the type of person Justin was.

We put this quote on his memorial bracelet:
And in the end, its not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years. -Abraham Lincoln "
